The tender, announced on January 10, invites contractors to submit their bids by May 7, with many firms already forming joint ventures to compete for the coveted contracts. This marks a significant step forward in the UAE’s plans for an ultra-modern high-speed rail (HSR) network, with further tenders expected in the coming months.
What’s Included in the First Phase?
The first phase of the UAE's HSR program will span 150 kilometers, connecting Abu Dhabi’s Al-Zahiyah area to Dubai’s Al-Jaddaf. Designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h, the rail line will dramatically reduce travel time between the country’s two largest cities. The journey between YAS and DJD stations will take just 30 minutes.
The initial phase of construction is divided into four key sections:
- Phase 1A: Al-Zahiyah to Yas Island (23.5 km)
- Phase 1B: Yas Island to the Abu Dhabi/Dubai border (64.2 km)
- Phase 1C: Border to Al-Jaddaf (52.1 km)
- Phase 1D: Abu Dhabi airport junction to the airport station (9.2 km)
The rail will feature five stations: Al-Zahiyah, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi Airport, and Al-Jaddaf, with underground stations at Al-Zahiyah, Abu Dhabi Airport, and Al-Jaddaf. Saadiyat Island’s station will be elevated, while Yas Island’s station will be at grade.
A major engineering feat, the project will involve a 31-kilometer tunnel section and the development of essential infrastructure, including two maintenance depots, rolling stock, and a complete railway system. Notably, Spanish firms Sener and Ineco have been appointed as the project's engineering consultants.
A Game-Changer for UAE's Mobility
The high-speed rail system is expected to be a game-changer, significantly improving connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, while also promoting sustainability and economic growth. Once completed, the UAE’s HSR network will gradually expand, eventually connecting other major cities such as Al-Ain and Sharjah, offering faster and more efficient travel for residents and tourists alike.
Preliminary site testing is already underway, with testing firms Matcon Testing Laboratory in Dubai and Engineering & Research International in Abu Dhabi conducting drilling operations to assess ground conditions along the proposed route.
As the project moves forward, it’s clear that this high-speed rail network will be a key pillar of the UAE's transportation future, driving both innovation and growth in the region.
Stay tuned as we continue to follow this transformative project!
