Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully completed the launching of two U-girders above Halav Bridge on Mumbai Metro Line 2B (D.N. Nagar–Mandale) at 4:00 a.m. on 21 February 2026. This milestone marks significant progress toward strengthening east–west connectivity in the city.
Metro Line 2B is a crucial corridor linking major residential and commercial hubs such as D.N. Nagar, BKC, Kurla, Chembur and Mandale. The successful execution of this complex engineering activity reflects steady advancement toward delivering a reliable and efficient public transport system for lakhs of daily commuters.
The Halav Bridge stretch posed notable technical challenges as it falls within the airport funnel zone, where the vertical clearance between the Metro viaduct and the existing bridge is restricted to 3.5 metres. Despite these constraints, the work was completed smoothly after obtaining all required approvals from the concerned authorities.
To minimise inconvenience in this busy traffic zone, the operation was carried out during night hours. This approach ensured public safety, reduced disruption, and facilitated the efficient deployment of heavy lifting equipment. Light motor vehicles including auto-rickshaws, taxis, tempos and ambulances continue to use Halav Bridge, while heavy vehicles have been diverted through designated alternative routes.
The adjoining S.G. Barve Marg Metro Station has been designed as a single-level structure in compliance with aviation height restrictions. Foundations and pier works for the station, along with viaduct sections on both sides of Halav Bridge, have already been completed, indicating coordinated and timely project execution.
The two U-girders, identified as P610–P611 (LHS), each measuring 20 metres in length, were erected using 500 MT capacity cranes under expert supervision. With this milestone achieved, the project will now progress to subsequent stages, including track laying, installation of the overhead catenary system, and development of power supply and telecommunication infrastructure.
Simultaneously, area improvement measures are being planned in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The proposed widening of A.H. Wadia Road aims to ease traffic circulation and facilitate smoother movement during Ganesh Visarjan and other peak periods. Rehabilitation of affected structures is also being undertaken in a structured and equitable manner to ensure inclusive development.
The successful U-girder launching at Halav Bridge underscores meticulous planning, technical precision and a balanced approach between engineering requirements and community sensitivity. With each milestone, Metro Line 2B moves closer to becoming a dependable and efficient mobility solution that will reduce travel time, decongest roads and enhance the overall quality of urban life in Mumbai.
