Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Metro Rail Today): Uzbekistan Railways (Uzbekiston Temir Yo’llari) has announced a major tender for the procurement of 40 high-speed electric trains, marking a significant step in the modernization of the country’s rail network. This tender, confirmed by Fazil Sharipov, the head of the JSC "O'ztemiryo'lyo'lovchi" department, aims to enhance Uzbekistan's transport infrastructure and improve connectivity across key regions.
Details regarding the delivery timelines and the commissioning of these trains will be shared once the tender process is complete. The procurement is part of Uzbekistan's broader strategy to develop efficient and sustainable transportation solutions, catering to increasing passenger demand and promoting economic growth.
Between 2011 and 2021, Uzbekistan Railways introduced six high-speed Afrosiyob trains, modified versions of the Spanish Talgo 250 model. These trains, capable of reaching speeds of 250 km/h, have played a crucial role in connecting major cities in Uzbekistan, significantly reducing travel times. The success of these trains laid the foundation for Uzbekistan’s current tender for additional high-speed trains.
Earlier this year, Uzbekistan Railways signed a significant agreement with South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem for the supply of six high-speed trains. These new trains will operate on the Tashkent–Urgench–Khiva route, further enhancing the country’s connectivity. The agreement also includes a maintenance contract, ensuring long-term reliability and performance for the fleet.
Uzbekistan’s investment in high-speed rail is not just about improving transportation; it is also a key component of the country’s broader economic development strategy. The expansion of the high-speed railway network is expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and enhance regional development by reducing travel times and improving access to key urban centers.
The introduction of new trains will support Uzbekistan’s position as a growing transport hub in Central Asia. The efficient movement of people and goods will strengthen Uzbekistan’s economy, particularly in underserved regions. Local experts believe that these investments will improve the competitiveness of Uzbekistan’s rail sector and elevate the country’s transport services to new levels.
Uzbekistan’s rail infrastructure is undergoing a modernization drive that includes the procurement of state-of-the-art trains and upgrades to existing lines. The new trains being procured are expected to be more advanced than previous models, incorporating cutting-edge technology to improve efficiency, safety, and passenger comfort.
The government’s focus on modernizing the railway sector is expected to attract further international interest and investment. Companies like Hyundai Rotem see Uzbekistan as a promising market for their high-speed train technology, which could lead to more collaborations in the future.
The tender for 40 high-speed trains is a critical step in strengthening Uzbekistan's railway sector and positioning the country as a key player in regional transportation. With the expansion of the high-speed rail network, Uzbekistan is poised to benefit from improved economic activity, greater connectivity, and increased tourism, ultimately contributing to the country’s long-term growth and development.
This investment in high-speed rail is part of a broader effort by Uzbekistan to embrace innovation and sustainability in its transport infrastructure. As the tender process unfolds, Uzbekistan is set to usher in a new era of rail travel, enhancing the quality of service and fostering regional economic development.
