Earlier, Mr. Roy held the position of Director (Mining & Construction Business) and has over 32 years of extensive experience in capital goods sectors for defense, mining & construction, transportation, transmission, renewable, and large power projects.

Mr. Roy holds a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering from NIT Raipur and also an MBA in Financial Management. He has served as Executive Director of BEML, responsible for the International Business Division, Strategy & New Initiatives, Coordination and Northern region operations, before assuming his current position in February 2023. As a six-sigma black belt certified professional, he is well-versed in various models of project financing, mechanisms and processes for financial closure of large projects, international laws, arbitration rules, international legal & arbitration cases, and statutory & legal compliances.

In a recent interview with Metro Rail Today, Mr. Roy shares his insights on BEML’s diverse contributions across Defence & Aerospace, Mining & Construction, and Rail & Metro sectors. His perspectives offer valuable understanding into the intersection of industry and innovation.

What strategic initiatives is BEML undertaking to maintain its position as a premier metro car manufacturer in India? Is there any plan to export metro coaches to other countries?

Starting FY 2024-25, BEML has undergone a significant organizational revamp. We have restructured the company into 11 Strategic Business Units (SBUs) and 2 micro-SBUs, including one dedicated to Commuter Rail and another to Metro Rail. This reorganization aims to facilitate faster decision-making, enhance efficiency, foster a culture of ownership, build a leadership pipeline, and promote excellence.

A notable strategic initiative is our recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to develop an indigenous Train Control Management System (i-TCMS) for metro trains. Historically, we have relied on foreign suppliers for such critical components. By collaborating with indigenized propulsion suppliers, we aim to ensure long-term service support and optimize costs. Additionally, we are exploring long-term contracts with suppliers to cover comprehensive maintenance requirements for more than 15 years.

We firmly believe that people are at the heart of organizational success. Therefore, BEML is actively recruiting talent across all levels, addressing attrition, and improving workforce diversity. Enhancing our infrastructure to boost execution capacities and capabilities is also a key focus area.

On the export front, BEML is keen on expanding its reach. We are actively exploring opportunities in several international markets, including South America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Presently, we are evaluating 2 to 3 potential projects in these regions. This international expansion aligns with our vision of establishing BEML as a global leader in metro coach manufacturing.

How does BEML plan to leverage its recent contract win for manufacturing and supplying metro coaches for the Bangalore Metro Phase 2 projects?

Winning the contract for the Bangalore Metro Phase 2 projects is a significant milestone for BEML. We plan to develop a platform for the 750V DC 3rd Rail System, which can be customized and applied to other metro projects like Kochi Metro, Bhubaneswar Metro, and others. This strategic development allows us to offer tailored solutions for diverse metro systems across India.

For the first time, BEML is executing a contract with long-term maintenance requirements. This experience will enhance our capability to manage similar demands for future metro projects, ensuring we deliver reliable and efficient services.

Our local supply chain is also expanding, which will have long-term benefits for both BEML and the broader industry. Strengthening our local partnerships not only supports our operational efficiency but also contributes to the overall growth and resilience of the metro rail manufacturing sector in India.

With near-term order prospects of over Rs. 100 billion for metro cars, how does BEML plan to scale its operations and meet the growing demand in cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Patna?

As mentioned earlier, BEML is implementing a series of strategic steps to maintain our leadership position in the metro car manufacturing sector. To meet the soaring demand, we are planning to increase both our outsourcing and insourcing scope in manufacturing. Over the next few years, we are planning a capital investment of [specific amount to be inserted], which will significantly enhance our production capabilities and capacity

What are BEML's strategies for fostering innovation and staying ahead in the competitive landscape of the rolling stock and transportation sector?

At BEML, fostering innovation is a key priority. We have established focus groups within the organization, such as the Futuristic Product Innovation and Incubation Centre, and Corporate Technology Planning and Alliance Management, to drive innovation across our operations. We are collaborating with internationally reputed design consultants to develop new products, including Vande Bharat Sleeper coaches, and exploring tie-ups with global MNCs for the development of aluminum coaches to meet railway requirements.

We are also making concerted efforts to motivate our workforce through continuous learning and development opportunities, encouraging cross-domain exposure, and organizing brainstorming sessions. A testament to our innovative spirit is that BEML has been granted several patents in the rail and metro field, and we are actively working to commercialize these innovations as we move ahead.

By prioritizing innovation and leveraging strategic collaborations, BEML is committed to staying ahead in the competitive landscape of the rolling stock and transportation sector.

In your opinion, what are the key factors driving BEML's success and growth trajectory in the current market scenario, particularly in the context of India's increasing investments in metro, railway, and defence sectors?

In the metro field, BEML benefits from a first-mover advantage, which we have successfully capitalized on to become the country's prominent metro car manufacturer. Looking ahead, several key factors will drive our continued success and growth:
