Afcons Infra–SAM India JV launched Forth TBM for Agra Metro Rail Project

Agra, India (Metro Rail Today): In a momentous event, Agra Metro witnessed a dual celebration with TBM Ganga achieving the final breakthrough in the Priority Corridor, coupled with the commencement of train trial runs. Adding to the excitement, Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India JV marked another significant milestone by launching their fourth Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), S115, in northern Agra.

The newly commissioned TBM, a refurbished Terratec Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine with serial number S115, will play a crucial role in constructing a 2.2 km tunnel from the RBS College Ramp to the Agra College Interchange Station. This tunnel forms part of Agra Metro Phase 1's Package AGCC-02, covering a total stretch of 7.93 km.

During its journey, TBM S115 will achieve two breakthroughs, strategically positioned at RBS College Station and Raja Ki Mandi Station, both integral points along the 14.25 km Line-1 (Sikandra – Taj East Gate).

TBM S115 boasts a unique history as one of Afcons' three machines (S88, S89, or S90) previously employed in constructing six tunnels on the 82 km Delhi – Meerut RRTS project's Package 8 within Meerut city. Originally featuring a cutter head diameter of 7.51m, the machine transformed to align with Agra Metro's specifications. A new cutter head, approximately 6.52 meters in diameter, was fitted for the current endeavor.

Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India JV initiated the lowering and assembly of TBM S115's parts at RBS College Ramp in November 2024.

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had awarded the Afcons – Sam India Consortium the civil construction contract for Package AGCC-02 in March 2022, with a substantial value of Rs. 1819.79 crore and a 48-month deadline. The designated section spans from chainage 3630.000 to 11564.485, comprising twin tunnels that connect seven stations: Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja Ki Mandi, and RBS College.

While celebrating these accomplishments, attention is drawn to the ongoing developments at RBS College Ramp. Construction work towards Sikandra is anticipated to commence in approximately nine months. UPMRC initiated the bidding process for the 3.725 km Package AGCC-05 in November, with the current technical bid opening date set for January 19, 2024.

In essence, the launch of TBM S115 marks a pivotal juncture in Agra Metro's progress, emphasizing the collaborative efforts and technical prowess of Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India JV in contributing to the region's transformative metro project.

As Agra Metro forges ahead with groundbreaking achievements, the launch of TBM S115 stands as a testament to the commitment and expertise invested in the project. With a series of breakthroughs on the horizon, the collaboration between Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India JV and UPMRC promises to redefine Agra's transportation landscape, bringing about enhanced connectivity and a brighter future for the city.
