Alstom signs contract to supply 20 additional Movia trains for Stockholm Metro

Stockholm, Sweden (Metro Rail Today): Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has announced an extension of its agreement with SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik), the public transport authority in Stockholm, for an additional 20 Movia C30 metro trains. This agreement builds on the initial contract signed in 2013, which included an order for 96 metro trains with an option for an extra 80. With the extension, Alstom will now supply a total of 116 metro trains, comprising 464 cars, to operate on the Stockholm metro system.

The Movia C30 metro trains are currently in service on the red line of the Stockholm metro, gradually replacing the older C20 trains on the same line. These trains are part of a broader modernization and capacity increase initiative by SL, aiming to accommodate over one million passengers daily. Additionally, the C30 metro train has received approval to operate on both the blue and green lines, anticipating future operational flexibility.

"It has been a privilege to supply Stockholm with advanced Movia C30 metro trains. Even more gratifying is witnessing the expanded fleet. We take pride in delivering these exceptional trains with an excellent collaboration with SL. The positive reception of the design among the people in Stockholm is truly rewarding," said Maria Signal Martebo, Managing Director of Alstom in Sweden.

The Movia C30 metro trains, manufactured in Germany, feature a robust regional design with distinct Scandinavian elements. Introduced in 2019, the carriages are easily recognizable with a modern white exterior, distinctive front lights, and playful design elements such as Pacman, crowns, hearts, and play symbols incorporated into ventilation holes under the windows.

The interior of the trains has been modernized to improve accessibility, enhance lighting, and optimize capacity during peak hours. These design improvements contribute to shorter station dwell times, allowing for more efficient boarding and alighting. Advanced technology, including features for eventual driverless operation, is integrated into these trains. With a driver's cab at both ends, the Movia C30 trains meet stringent environmental standards, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainable material choices, including woolen seat covers sourced from Sweden.

Alstom's continued collaboration with SL and the expansion of the Movia C30 fleet underscore the company's commitment to delivering cutting-edge, eco-friendly mobility solutions for urban transportation.

The extension of the agreement between Alstom and SL for an additional 20 Movia C30 metro trains reflects the success and positive impact of these trains on Stockholm's metro system. This collaboration not only enhances the capacity and efficiency of the public transport network but also showcases the synergy between innovative design and sustainable mobility solutions.
