BEML flags off 2100th Metro Coach and expands operations with new manufacturing unit in MP

Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major boost to India’s railway manufacturing capabilities, BEML Ltd. marked a dual milestone today by flagging off its 2100th metro coach at its Bengaluru Rail Coach Unit and announcing the establishment of a new state-of-the-art rail manufacturing facility in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh.

The ceremony was graced by Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, who also formally handed over the land allotment letter to Shri Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Ltd. The new facility, to be built on 60.063 hectares of land in Umeria, will focus on manufacturing rolling stock and metro coaches to support upcoming rail and urban transit projects across India.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said:

“The rollout of BEML’s 2100th metro coach stands as a powerful reflection of India’s growing stature in advanced manufacturing, engineering excellence and indigenous technology. The new facility in Raisen will catalyze employment, support MSMEs, and strengthen our commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth.”

The metro coach flagged off has been built for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and features the latest in driverless technology. Fully compliant with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) standards, the coach is equipped for Unattended Train Operation (UTO) and includes cutting-edge safety and monitoring systems aligned with global best practices.

A standout feature of this coach is the Onboard Condition Monitoring System, the first of its kind in India. It integrates five high-tech modules for real-time monitoring of rail track conditions, overhead equipment (OHE), pantograph-OHE interaction, arc detection, and rail profile analysis. These systems enable predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics directly from the depot’s control centre—significantly improving operational efficiency and reliability.

The coach also prioritizes passenger comfort and safety, offering ergonomic interiors, dynamic route maps, CCTV surveillance, advanced air conditioning, digital fire detection, and even a dedicated cycle stand—delivering a modern, commuter-focused travel experience.

Commenting on this milestone, Shri Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML Ltd., said:

“We are deeply thankful to the Hon’ble Chief Minister for placing his trust in BEML and for facilitating the land for our new manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. This expansion will further strengthen our ability to serve the nation’s infrastructure needs. Crossing the 2100-coach mark is a proud moment for all of us at BEML. It reflects our dedication to innovation, quality, and self-reliance as we aim to deliver world-class solutions for India and the global market.”

Dr. Vinod Shah, Communications Director of Urban Infra Group, also lauded BEML’s achievement, stating:

“The rollout of the 2100th metro coach by BEML is a proud moment for India’s rail and metro ecosystem. This milestone demonstrates the power of Make in India and BEML’s engineering leadership in delivering future-ready, passenger-centric mobility solutions. With advanced features and automation, BEML continues to set new standards in the evolution of urban transit.”

BEML’s metro legacy began with the RS1 project for DMRC in the early 2000s. Since then, BEML has supplied coaches for major cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai. With its continued focus on automation, indigenisation, and sustainability, BEML is playing a pivotal role in transforming India’s public transport infrastructure while expanding its global footprint.
