Bhopal, India (Metro Rail Today): BEML Ltd. on 8th July 2025 marked a watershed moment for India’s rail manufacturing story by laying the foundation stone for BRAHMA – BEML Rail Hub for Advanced Manufacturing at Umaria, near Bhopal, while simultaneously clinching its first overseas metro rolling-stock contract from Malaysia. The twin developments — a massive domestic capacity build-out and an international order win — together underline how India’s rail industry is scaling up to meet both home demand and export opportunities.
Spread over 60 hectares with an investment of ₹1,800 crore, BRAHMA is being positioned as a world-class facility to produce next-generation Vande Bharat trainsets, Amrit Bharat coaches, metro and rapid-rail coaches, and high-speed rolling stock. BEML says the plant will be equipped with advanced design, engineering and manufacturing systems and is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, with focussed skill-development programmes for the local workforce. Company leaders expect initial production to roll out within two to three years as construction and commissioning progress.
At the same time, BEML’s breakthrough overseas order — reported by major business media — comes from Malaysia’s national transport operator and covers the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of metro cars for Kuala Lumpur’s urban transit network. The contract, reported to be worth in the region of ₹250 crore, is the company’s first confirmed export of metro rolling stock and a tangible validation of its ability to meet international technical and quality standards.
The foundation ceremony was attended by senior leaders including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. Ministers and BEML’s CMD highlighted BRAHMA’s strategic role in supporting the nation’s rail ambitions — from scaling up Vande Bharat production to supplying metros and future high-speed corridors — and emphasised the project’s employment and regional industrialisation benefits.
Commenting on the developments, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “BRAHMA is a landmark for India’s industrial transformation. Building high-end rolling stock capability domestically is essential not only to meet our massive urban and intercity rail needs but also to become a supplier to the world. BEML’s Malaysia order demonstrates that Indian manufacturing can compete globally — it’s a strong vote of confidence for Make in India and will spur further private and public investment in the rail ecosystem.”
With BRAHMA set to strengthen domestic capacity and the Malaysian order opening export doors, BEML’s twin announcements signal a shift from large-scale import dependence to indigenous production and outward expansion — a development likely to accelerate supplier ecosystems, skills training and regional economic activity around Umaria and beyond.
