New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has granted in-principle approval for the extension of the Delhi Metro Yellow Line from Samaypur Badli to Sonipat, via Nathupur. This significant development allows the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to begin preparations for the Detailed Project Report (DPR), marking a key step in the expansion of Delhi’s metro network.
Tokhan Sahu, the Minister of State for MoHUA, confirmed the approval in a written statement to the Lok Sabha. He stated that the approval would enable the DMRC to proceed with the DPR, which is essential for the project’s next stages. The approval follows a parliamentary query regarding the potential extension of the Yellow Line from Samaypur Badli to Narela.
Sahu also mentioned that the central government provides financial assistance for urban rail-based systems, subject to the feasibility of the proposal and the availability of resources. This assistance is provided based on requests from state governments or Union Territories (UT) administrations.
The Delhi Metro Yellow Line, currently spanning 47.2 km, connects Samaypur Badli to Millennium City Centre in Gurugram. The line serves 37 stations and provides eight interchange points with other metro lines, enhancing connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR). Key stations on the Yellow Line include Samaypur Badli, Rohini Sector 18 and 19, Haiderpur Badli Mor, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, and Patel Chowk, offering convenient access to the city center and major commercial areas such as Millennium City Centre and IFFCO Chowk.
The proposed extension to Sonipat further strengthens the Delhi Metro’s reach, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing expansion of the metro network. With a total network length of 395 km and 12 operational lines, the Delhi Metro is the longest metro system in India, connecting Delhi with neighboring cities in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, including the Noida-Greater Noida Aqua Line and Rapid Metro Gurugram.
The DMRC continues to lead the expansion of the metro network, providing a vital transportation option for millions of residents in Delhi and surrounding areas, enhancing urban mobility, and reducing traffic congestion.
