CMRS completes safety inspection on Mumbai Metro Line 2B and Line 9

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Lines 2B and 9 have taken a major step toward becoming operational, with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) successfully completing the safety inspection of both corridors on July 4, 2025. This inspection is a crucial part of the pre-operational process and paves the way for the final certification, which is required before these lines can be opened to the public.

The safety inspection comes after months of rigorous trial runs conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which has been overseeing the development of the city's expanding metro network. As part of the inspection, CMRS officials—along with senior railway and metro operations experts—closely examined all critical systems, including overhead electrification, signaling and communication infrastructure, track alignment, civil structures, and passenger safety protocols.

Metro Line 2B, in its first phase, covers a 5.39-kilometer elevated stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden. The route includes five stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, Bharat Petroleum (BSL), Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. This line is part of the larger Metro Line 2 corridor that aims to strengthen east-west connectivity across Mumbai, especially in high-traffic zones where road congestion has become a daily challenge for commuters.

Meanwhile, Metro Line 9 connects Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, covering a 4.4-kilometer elevated route with four stations. This corridor extends the Metro Line 7 route and is designed to improve north-south suburban connectivity, particularly benefiting areas in the western suburbs that currently lack efficient public transit options.

Sources from the MMRDA confirmed that a compliance checklist will soon be issued by the CMRS, detailing any final adjustments or upgrades needed before a final approval is granted. Once certified, both metro lines will be ready for full-fledged operations. Authorities are optimistic that the commercial launch of Phase 1 of both Metro Lines 2B and 9 will take place by December 2025, aligning with the city’s broader infrastructure development goals.

The opening of these new metro lines is expected to be a game-changer for Mumbai’s public transportation landscape. With the city's population exceeding 20 million, and traffic congestion ranked among the worst in the world, the expansion of the metro network is crucial to improving daily commutes. The introduction of these lines will offer a faster, safer, and environmentally friendly alternative to road travel, helping to reduce carbon emissions and ease pressure on Mumbai’s overburdened roadways.

In addition to improved travel times and convenience, the metro expansion is also expected to boost local real estate, increase job opportunities, and support sustainable urban growth in key development corridors. As Mumbai continues its transition into a modern, interconnected metropolis, Metro Lines 2B and 9 represent a significant step forward in the city's commitment to efficient and inclusive mobility.
