Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): Mr. Sumit Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), conducted an important inspection of the advanced Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system on the Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line between Joka and Majerhat. This crucial step brings the line closer to operational readiness, ensuring the corridor meets the highest safety and efficiency standards.
The inspection began at the Joka Depot, where the CRS thoroughly reviewed the carshed, maintenance facilities, and rolling stock. This assessment ensures all components are in top condition before operations commence.
A live demonstration was held, with the CRS boarding a rake and traveling from Joka Depot to Majerhat station. This real-time evaluation allowed for a hands-on assessment of the CBTC system’s functionality, including train control and signalling operations.
Upon reaching Majerhat, Mr. Singhal visited the Operation Control Centre (OCC), where he reviewed the monitoring and control systems responsible for managing CBTC operations throughout the stretch. The OCC ensures that train movements are smoothly controlled and monitored.
The inspection was attended by senior officials, including Mr. Anuj Mittal, PCE; Mr. S. R. Meena, PCSTE; Mr. Amit Tandon, ED/Metro, RVNL alongside key Metro Railway and RVNL officials, the visit highlighted the strong coordination between Metro Railway and RVNL, crucial for the smooth implementation of the project.
The successful inspection of the CBTC system is a pivotal milestone for the Joka–Majerhat Purple Line, which is rapidly progressing toward full commissioning. With all critical components thoroughly checked, the line is set to offer enhanced safety, automation, and efficiency, positioning Kolkata Metro’s expanding urban transit network for a modernized future. This inspection marks a significant step forward in Kolkata's vision of a smarter, more connected metro system.
