The newly delivered train, configured for Distance to Go (DTG) signaling, was rolled out from CRRC’s Nanjing plant in December 2024. It forms part of the 36-train (216 coach) contract, with 21 trains set to enhance operations on the purple and green lines. These trains are crucial to meeting the demands of high-frequency operations, as both lines’ lengths were recently extended by a total of 33.38 kilometers.
The expanded routes include connections to Challaghatta (October 2023), Whitefield (March 2023), Silk Institute (January 2021), and Madavara (November 2024). With these extensions, the demand for new trains has increased to maintain smooth and efficient service for the growing ridership.
Enhancing Bangalore's Metro with Cutting-Edge Technology
These trains, manufactured by CRRC, will operate alongside the 56 existing trains supplied by BEML. The new trains will allow for the higher frequency of service necessary for the expanded metro network. Additionally, the 15 trains not assigned to the purple and green lines will be deployed on the upcoming Yellow Line, which will connect RV Road, Electronic City, and Bommasandra via 16 stations.
The trains on the Yellow Line will be equipped with the latest in train control technology, enabling driverless operations using Siemens' communications-based train control (CBTC) signaling solution. Two trains for the Yellow Line have already been manufactured — one by CRRC in Nanjing, China, and another by Titagarh Rail Systems in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
A Seamless Integration Across Lines
While the newly delivered purple-striped train was designed with the purple line in mind, it could be deployed on either the purple or green line thanks to the unique 210-meter-long rake interchange link at the Majestic Station. This flexibility allows for more efficient management of train operations across these extended lines.
BMRCL has now received both the prototype trains for the purple/green lines and the Yellow Line, with the first Titagarh-assembled train for the Yellow Line expected at Hebbagodi Depot soon. Going forward, all trains under this contract will be assembled by Titagarh with support from CRRC’s engineers, signaling a smooth ramp-up in production.
Looking Ahead
As BMRCL prioritizes operationalizing the Yellow Line, the delivery of additional trains is expected to continue. Titagarh’s press release suggests that the company will deliver two more trains to the Yellow Line by April this year and ramp up production to two trains per month by September 2025.
With these developments, Bangalore’s metro system is set to take a giant leap towards becoming a more reliable, efficient, and future-ready urban transport solution, transforming the city's connectivity and offering faster, smoother rides for its growing population.
