Gandhinagar Metro extends Trial Run from Sachivalaya to Mahatma Mandir

Gandhinagar, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant step toward enhancing urban connectivity in Gujarat, the Gandhinagar Metro conducted a successful trial run from Sachivalaya to Mahatma Mandir on October 2, coinciding with Vijayadashami celebrations. The announcement was made through an official statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

This marks a major extension of the earlier limited trial run and now includes five additional stations: Akshardham, Old Sachivalaya, Sector 16, Sector 24, and Mahatma Mandir. Under the continuous oversight of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the metro rail development has picked up notable momentum, aiming to serve as a sustainable and efficient mode of public transport between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

According to the press release, once the trial run is completed successfully, the Metro Rail Commissioner will submit applications for safety inspection and approval to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). Pending approval, metro services to Mahatma Mandir are expected to be operational by Nutan Varsh (Gujarati New Year), which typically falls in mid-October to early November.

“Extending the trial run to Mahatma Mandir is a key milestone for the Gandhinagar metro corridor. It signifies readiness not only in terms of infrastructure but also in system performance and integration,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “Once operational, this line will greatly ease public commuting in the twin cities and set new benchmarks in clean, accessible urban mobility.”

The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro corridor is part of the larger Gujarat Metro Rail Project, which spans 68 kilometers and will include a total of 53 stations upon full completion. The project is designed to provide affordable, comfortable, and pollution-free transport, while decongesting roads and reducing dependency on private vehicles.

The latest extension to Mahatma Mandir — a key administrative and convention destination — will significantly enhance last-mile connectivity for commuters, government employees, and event attendees. Akshardham and Sector 24 stations also cater to major tourist and residential zones, making this trial a critical precursor to full-fledged operations.

Once inaugurated, this phase of the metro will serve as a model for sustainable urban transit in other Indian state capitals and Tier-II cities.
