(CMRL) has re-invited bids for the procurement of 32 new train sets, totaling 96 coaches, for the expansive 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project under package ARE04A. Originally planning to lease 42 trains, CMRL decided to change course after receiving only one application in November 2021. The re-invited bids, funded through local Tamil Nadu government state funds, are now sought for 32 trains, with the coaches operating on standard gauge tracks. The bidding process carries an estimated contract period of 1300 days, with a detailed timeline for manufacturing and delivery specified in the tender documents.

The contract package ARE04A is a crucial component of Chennai Metro's Phase 2 project, contributing to the enhancement of urban transportation in the region. With 32 new train sets on the horizon, CMRL aims to bolster its metro network, ensuring efficient and reliable connectivity across various lines and corridors. The decision to procure these coaches through fresh bidding underscores the commitment to optimizing resources and aligning with the evolving needs of the project.

The re-invited bids bring transparency and competitiveness to the procurement process, emphasizing the importance of selecting a qualified entity for the ARE04A package. The estimated contract period of 1300 days, coupled with a comprehensive maintenance contract for fifteen years, sets the stage for a long-term partnership aimed at ensuring the optimal performance and longevity of the rolling stock.

The tender documents outline specific technical requirements and innovations expected from the winning bidder. With a focus on design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, and comprehensive maintenance, the ARE04A package demands a commitment to quality and adherence to timelines. The coaches, at 22,600 mm long and 2900mm wide, showcase a streamlined design, emphasizing efficiency and passenger comfort.

The 96 coaches procured under the ARE04A package are yet to be designated for any specific line or corridor within the project. Stabling locations at Madhavaram, Semmancheri, or Poonamalee depots will play a crucial role in optimizing operational logistics.
