Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major boost for Pune’s rapidly expanding urban transit network, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project.
This marks the second major clearance under Phase-2, following the approval of Line 2A and 2B. Together, the newly approved corridors span 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, forming a crucial east–south–west link across Pune’s busiest commercial, IT, educational, and residential zones.
The project will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and bilateral/multilateral agencies. Maha-Metro will execute all civil, electrical, mechanical, and system works.
Lines 4 and 4A are part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will integrate seamlessly with existing corridors at:
Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2)
Swargate (Line 1)
Hadapsar Railway Station, enabling metro–rail interchange
Future routes towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road
Once completed within five years, the new lines will significantly enhance multimodal connectivity across metro, railway, and PMPML bus networks.
The Kharadi–Khadakwasla and Nal Stop–Warje corridors are expected to become major passenger arteries, with ridership projected to grow sharply:
2028: 4.09 lakh passengers/day
2038: ~7 lakh
2048: 9.63 lakh
2058: 11.70 lakh+ passengers/day
Line 4 (Kharadi–Khadakwasla)
2028: 3.23 lakh/day
2058: 9.33 lakh/day
Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug)
2028: 85,555/day
2058: 2.41 lakh/day
This steep rise reflects Pune’s rapid population growth, expanding IT and industrial hubs, and increasing reliance on sustainable transport systems.
The new lines will serve some of Pune’s most congested routes, including:
Solapur Road
Magarpatta Road
Karve Road
Sinhagad Road
Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway (NH-48)
From Kharadi’s IT parks to Hadapsar’s industrial estates, Swargate’s transit hub to Khadakwasla’s scenic belt, and Warje’s residential clusters, the metro lines will provide fast, reliable and green mobility options.
With the approval of Line 4 and 4A, Pune Metro's network will cross the 100 km milestone, marking a major step in the city’s long-term mobility transformation.
These two corridors are expected to ease traffic on Pune’s busiest roads, reduce pollution, cut travel times dramatically, and form the backbone of a modern, integrated urban transport system.
