Gurugram Metro Construction Begins with First Piling Work Near Sector 31

Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): Construction of the long-awaited Gurugram Metro Rail Project officially began today with the commencement of piling work for the first metro pillar near the Sector 31 traffic signal, marking a major milestone for the ambitious urban transport project. The work is being carried out by the joint venture of Dilip Buildcon Limited and Ranjit Buildcon Limited, the main contractor for Phase 1 of the metro.

The piling rig, capable of drilling up to 180 metres deep, was brought to the site overnight, and excavation began early Monday morning, according to officials from Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL).

“The piling rig has begun operations and will proceed toward Subhash Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk, eventually reaching Sector 9. Road barricading will be carried out in phases to facilitate smooth and safe construction,” said a senior GMRL official.

Massive Construction Plan Underway

Phase 1 of the project includes:

  • 15.22 km elevated metro viaduct

  • 15 new metro stations

  • 1.85 km spur to connect Dwarka Expressway

  • Ramp access to the depot at Sector 33

  • 2,178 pillars to be constructed across the route

The first test pile had earlier been conducted near the GMDA office in Sector 44, and today's activity signals the shift from planning to full-scale execution. The advanced piling rig used by the contractor is expected to complete digging and concreting of each pillar foundation within 12 hours, making it a key asset in fast-tracking the construction process.

“The deployment of high-capacity machinery enables us to maintain momentum and meet construction milestones effectively,” added the official.

Station Network and Connectivity

The Gurugram Metro Phase 1 corridor will connect key residential, business, and industrial sectors of the city. The planned stations include:

  • Millennium City Centre (interchange with DMRC)

  • Sector 45

  • Cyber Park (Sector 46)

  • Sector 47

  • Subhash Chowk

  • Sector 48

  • Sector 33

  • Hero Honda Chowk

  • Udyog Vihar Phase VI

  • Sector 10

  • Sector 37

  • Basai

  • Sector 9

  • Sector 101

This corridor will improve last-mile connectivity, decongest arterial roads, and provide seamless metro integration with Delhi via the Millennium City Centre interchange.

“The Gurugram Metro will be transformative for urban mobility in the region, creating a clean, efficient, and future-ready transit system,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “The commencement of piling work is a strong signal of execution on ground.”

Land Acquisition & Site Preparation

To maintain construction timelines, GMRL has requested the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) to expedite land handovers at Sector 10 and Sector 33, where casting yards are planned.

An HSVP official confirmed that efforts are underway to clear construction waste and remove encroachments. “We had already taken action in Sector 33, and remaining encroachments at other sites will be removed shortly,” the official stated.

The Gurugram Metro Project was inaugurated on September 5 at the same location by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The metro aims to support the city's exponential growth and promote green, modern transport infrastructure.

The start of piling work marks the beginning of physical construction for the Gurugram Metro, bringing the city closer to achieving a long-awaited dream of seamless, high-capacity public transport. As land acquisition and construction ramp up, the project is expected to significantly reshape urban mobility and connectivity in Gurugram, laying the foundation for future expansion and integration with regional transit systems.
