Haryana Govt approves ₹1,662 crore construction tender for Gurugram Metro Phase 2

Gurugram, India (Rail & Metro Today): The Haryana government has approved a ₹1,662 crore civil construction tender, including 18% GST, for Phase 2 of the Gurugram Metro project. The tender is expected to be floated within a week, marking a significant step towards the expansion of the city's metro network from Sector 9 to DLF Cyber City.

According to a senior Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) official, the approved tender covers major civil construction works for the proposed 15.3-km elevated corridor, which will have 14 stations and connect Old Gurugram with DLF Cyber City.

15.3-km Corridor to Connect Sector 9 with Cyber City

The Phase 2 corridor will run from Sector 9 to DLF Cyber City, passing through several residential, commercial and employment hubs. The alignment will serve Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phase 4, Udyog Vihar Phase 5 and DLF Cyber City.

The corridor is also planned to provide interchange connectivity with the existing Rapid Metro network and the Namo Bharat Rail corridor, strengthening connections between Gurugram's different rapid transit systems.

The civil construction package includes the elevated viaduct, metro stations, tracks and associated civil works. Signalling, electrical, traction and design-related works will be taken up through separate packages.

Double-Decker Metro Sections Planned

A notable component of the Phase 2 civil works is the construction of proposed double-decker sections at Bajghera and along Old Delhi Road.

According to the source, the double-decker stretches have been incorporated following requirements from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The arrangement is intended to optimise available road space while facilitating smoother traffic movement in sections where the metro infrastructure will share a constrained urban corridor.

The approved tender therefore covers not only the main elevated metro infrastructure but also the proposed double-decker structures at the identified locations.

Depot Tender Approval Expected

The approval of the Phase 2 civil tender follows the earlier submission of the tender to the Haryana government after receiving World Bank approval in June. The tender was subsequently returned to the metro authorities after observations and objections were raised by the Chief Minister's Office, before being modified and resubmitted for approval.

GMRL officials have also indicated that approval for the metro depot tender is expected soon, which would support the project's future operational requirements.

The overall estimated cost of the Gurugram Metro project was revised from ₹5,452 crore to ₹10,266 crore in May, with the revision attributed to inflation and revised GST rates.

Phase 1 Construction Underway

GMRL is currently executing Phase 1, covering approximately 15 km from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9, with 13 stations and a spur towards Sector 101 near Dwarka Expressway.

Construction of Phase 1 began in September last year, and around 15% of the work has been completed, according to the information provided.

The Haryana government has also decided to acquire land under the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, after several private landowners declined to sell land under the metro purchase policy.

With the civil construction tender for Phase 2 now approved, the project is moving towards the next stage of implementation. Once developed, the Sector 9–Cyber City corridor is planned to extend metro connectivity through Old Gurugram and provide interchange opportunities with existing and planned regional transit systems.
