New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): Indian Railways is gearing up to launch the Amrit Bharat 3.0 trains, a new class of upgraded trains designed to serve all passenger categories — from general and sleeper to air-conditioned classes. These trains are envisioned to modernize the broader passenger rail experience beyond the premium Vande Bharat segment, marking a major step toward inclusive mobility and infrastructure transformation.
The new Amrit Bharat 3.0 series will feature enhanced speed, comfort, and amenities, while being built with a cost-effective design suited for mass-scale production. Unlike previous premium categories focused largely on high-speed intercity travel, the Amrit Bharat 3.0 trains are expected to modernize regular express and mail trains that carry the majority of India’s railway passengers.
With production to be led by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Modern Coach Factory (MCF), and Rail Coach Factory (RCF), the rollout will begin in a phased manner, with the first rakes likely to hit the tracks in the next 12–18 months. Key features will include better seating and berth designs, improved toilets, enhanced lighting, wider gangways, and digital display systems for real-time information.
The Amrit Bharat series — launched under the government’s vision of a modern, accessible, and affordable railway for all — will complement the Vande Bharat trains while serving longer routes and stations with higher passenger volumes.
On this landmark development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, shared her views:
"The introduction of Amrit Bharat 3.0 is a much-needed evolution in Indian Railways' approach to passenger experience. It democratizes modernization — ensuring that comfort, speed, and efficiency are no longer exclusive to premium travelers. This is truly a people’s train, and it represents the future of inclusive, scalable transport innovation in India."
She also noted that India's coach manufacturing ecosystem is now well-positioned to deliver on both premium and economy-class upgrades, enabling long-term transformation across the network.
Officials said that the Amrit Bharat 3.0 trains are being designed with modular construction techniques, allowing for quick maintenance and easier future upgrades. These trains will also be equipped with semi-permanent couplers, modern braking systems, and energy-efficient propulsion, significantly improving safety and sustainability.
With more than 20,000 daily trains running across the country, the rollout of Amrit Bharat 3.0 is poised to make a tangible impact on the travel experience of millions — especially in Tier-II and Tier-III cities where infrastructure upgrades are long overdue.
