In an exclusive interview with TOI, Mr. Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director of BEML Limited delve into the future expansion plans for Kolkata's East-West Metro. With a keen focus on enhancing urban transportation infrastructure, Mr. Roy provides insights into the ambitious endeavors underway to augment the metro network's capacity and efficiency.
Let's explore the details of their conversation with Mr. Shantanu Roy.
Certainly. Over the next two years, the East-West Metro is set to bolster its fleet with an additional 11 high-end rakes, bringing the total count to 25. Currently, we have 14 state-of-the-art BEML-make rakes operating on the Green line, with three more on the way.
The new rakes are scheduled to start arriving between June and August of this year.
We have almost completed manufacturing three more rakes, with the propulsion system components expected from Japan shortly. These components include the traction motor and the train control management system, which governs various aspects such as propulsion, brakes, lighting, and communication systems.
Yes, indeed. KMRC is prepared to order four more rakes, and discussions are underway for an additional four. The final decision on ordering all eight at once will depend on the availability of funds.
With the addition of the three rakes from the recent agreement and the eight more expected in the next two years, the East-West Metro's fleet will grow to a total of 25 rakes.
Yes, BEML may collaborate with ICF (Integral Coach Factory) in Chennai to manufacture futuristic rakes for other Metro corridors in Kolkata. This collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for more efficient standard gauge coaches.
Certainly. The tunnels, originally constructed in the 1970s, pose challenges due to their width limitations, necessitating tailored coaches for lines like the North-South line. However, the Jica-funded East-West Metro, being standard gauge, offers opportunities for more standardized rakes.
RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Limited), the implementing agency for most other Kolkata Metro projects, has already ordered 57 rakes. BEML intends to aggressively bid for supplying rakes to these lines, extending our contribution to Kolkata's expanding Metro network.
You're welcome. It's my pleasure.
