Iraq extends Bid Submission Deadline for Baghdad and Najaf–Karbala Metro Projects

Baghdad, Iraq (Metro Rail Today): In a move aimed at fostering infrastructural development, Iraq has decided to extend the deadline for the submission of investment bids for two significant metro projects - the Baghdad Metro and the Najaf – Karbala Metro. This extension comes as part of the National Investment Commission's efforts to ensure wider participation and interest in these transformative projects.

The National Investment Commission (NIC) has announced a one-month extension, adding to the urgency and anticipation surrounding these ambitious ventures. Originally slated for April 11, 2024, the new deadline provides potential investors with an extended window to prepare and submit their proposals, highlighting the government's commitment to transparency and inclusivity in the bidding process.

The Baghdad Metro, colloquially known as the Baghdad Elevated Train (BET), represents a crucial step towards modernizing the Iraqi capital's transportation infrastructure. With construction scheduled to commence in 2023 and completion expected by 2027, this rapid transit system promises to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity across the city.

French multinational Alstom and South Korea's Hyundai are poised to spearhead the $2.5 billion project, leveraging their expertise to deliver a state-of-the-art transportation network. Featuring 14 stations and spanning 31 kilometers, the Baghdad Metro aims to cater to the burgeoning needs of residents and commuters, heralding a new era of urban mobility.

Despite initial setbacks and delays, including challenges in securing funding and regulatory approvals, the Baghdad Metro remains a focal point of the government's infrastructure agenda. Plans for a comprehensive seven-line network, encompassing 150 kilometers and 64 stations, underscore the magnitude of this ambitious undertaking, with provisions for diverse passenger demographics and accessibility needs.

Meanwhile, the Najaf - Karbala Metro project holds strategic significance in facilitating pilgrimage and religious tourism between the revered cities of Najaf and Karbala. Stretching over 90 kilometers, this electrified transport corridor promises safe, efficient, and rapid transit for millions of pilgrims visiting sacred Shia sites.

Commencing from Najaf International Airport and traversing key hubs in Najaf and Karbala, this metro line is poised to redefine pilgrimage logistics, offering enhanced convenience and accessibility for visitors. The adoption of a comprehensive design, build, operate, maintain, finance, and transfer (DBOMFT) model underscores Iraq's commitment to sustainable development and public-private partnerships.

The decision to extend the bid submission deadline for the Baghdad and Najaf – Karbala metro projects reflects Iraq's steadfast commitment to fostering economic growth and modernizing its transportation infrastructure. As the country embarks on these transformative endeavors, stakeholders and investors alike are poised to contribute to the realization of a more connected and prosperous future.
