K-RIDE issues ₹986 crore Traction and Power Supply Tender for Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project

Bengaluru, India (Rail & Metro Today): Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE) has invited bids for a major ₹986-crore traction and power supply package for Corridors 2 and 4 and the Soladevanahalli Depot of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project.

The package covers critical electrical and traction systems required for the operation of Bengaluru’s planned suburban rail network. The works include receiving substations, incoming cables from grid substations, 25 kV AC traction-cum-33 kV auxiliary main substations and 25 kV overhead equipment.

The scope also includes auxiliary power supply systems, SCADA and other associated electrical works required to support reliable railway operations.

Major Traction and Electrical Package

The traction package is an important component of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, as the systems will provide electrical power for train operations as well as auxiliary requirements across the covered sections.

The planned works include the interface between grid power supply and railway traction infrastructure, including receiving substations and incoming cables. The package also provides for 25 kV AC traction systems and 33 kV auxiliary power arrangements.

The installation of 25 kV overhead equipment will enable electric train operations, while SCADA systems will support monitoring and control of electrical assets.

The inclusion of the Soladevanahalli Depot within the package will also provide electrical and traction infrastructure for depot operations.

Bengaluru Suburban Rail Network

The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project is planned as a four-corridor network covering 148.17 km and 57 stations. The system is intended to strengthen rail connectivity between central Bengaluru and suburban and peripheral areas of the metropolitan region.

The planned network covers important routes towards locations including Devanahalli, Chikkabanavara, Whitefield and Rajanukunte, providing an additional rail-based transport option for longer-distance journeys.

The suburban rail system is being developed to improve connectivity between Bengaluru and its rapidly expanding outskirts, including residential, commercial and industrial areas.

Corridor-Wise Construction Progress

According to a Rajya Sabha reply by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on July 24, 2026, construction and preparatory activities are progressing across all four corridors.

On Corridor 1, alignment plans have been approved, while land acquisition and shifting of signalling, telecommunications and electrical utilities are underway.

For Corridor 2, land acquisition has been completed. Contracts for station buildings have been awarded, with construction work underway along with other project activities.

On Corridor 3, alignment plans have been approved and land acquisition and utility-shifting activities are in progress.

For Corridor 4, land acquisition is continuing. Of the required 57 acres, 43 acres have been acquired so far. Contracts for station buildings have also been awarded and construction is underway.

The progress across the four corridors indicates that the project is advancing through different stages of land acquisition, utility relocation, station construction and associated infrastructure development.

The latest K-RIDE tender adds another major systems package to the development of Bengaluru’s suburban railway network. Alongside station and civil works already progressing on different corridors, the deployment of traction, electrical and control infrastructure will be essential for moving the project towards eventual railway operations.

Once completed, the four-corridor, 148.17-km network is expected to provide Bengaluru with an additional high-capacity rail transport option, connecting the city with several suburban and peripheral growth centres and supporting more efficient regional mobility.
