Kanpur, India (Metro Rail News): The Kanpur Metro Rail Project witnessed a significant milestone today with the launch of the 'Tatya' Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for tunnel construction under the first corridor of the metro project. The TBM was inaugurated at the Naveen Market underground station and will undertake the construction of an underground tunnel till Bada Chauraha on the down-line.
The Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, which spans approximately 4 kilometers, has already seen the successful deployment of 'Nana' and 'Tatya' Tunnel Boring Machines. These machines have completed the construction of both 'up-line' and 'down-line' tunnels, covering a distance of around 1025 meters between Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj and about 750 meters between Chunniganj to Naveen Market.
The 'Tatya' TBM achieved its first breakthrough on 16th January 2023 when it reached Nayaganj while constructing a tunnel from Bada Chauraha. Subsequently, the machine was retrieved from the retrieval shaft and relaunched from the launching shaft at Chunniganj. On 10th July, the TBM achieved another breakthrough as it arrived at Naveen Market underground station. In a time-saving maneuver, the machine was transported from one end to the other inside the 215-meter-long Naveen Market station using the 'Dragging' method.
Furthermore, the 'Nana' Tunnel Boring Machine commenced tunnel construction on the 'up-line' from Naveen Market to Bada Chauraha on 15th July 2023. To date, this machine has erected 56 rings inside the tunnel, successfully completing approximately 79 meters of tunneling.
Mr. Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., congratulated the entire UPMRC team on this momentous occasion. He praised the efficient implementation of the project and the cooperation of the people of Kanpur, which has enabled rapid progress in the city's metro construction. Mr. Kumar expressed confidence in the team's dedication and commitment to achieving all set targets within the stipulated time.
Currently, construction work is advancing at a swift pace on multiple sections of the first corridor, including the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section, and Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project.
The launch of the 'Tatya' TBM marks a significant step forward in the development of Kanpur's modern metro rail system, which is expected to enhance transportation and connectivity in the city, benefiting its residents and commuters alike.
