L&T launches first U-Girder for Corridor 5 for Chennai Metro Phase 2

Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today):  In a significant development for the Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 project, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has successfully initiated the launching of U-girders at the Retteri Flyover using a sophisticated launching gantry (LG) crane. This marks a crucial milestone for the 44.6 km Chennai Metro Line-5, specifically the 10.2 km stretch from CMBT to Venugopal Nagar under Package EV-03. L&T's innovative approach involves the use of a twin-truss LG crane with impressive specifications, including a length of 68.67 m, a weight of 235 MT, and the capability to erect U-girders at a 4% gradient.

The decision to deploy a launching gantry at Retteri was prompted by challenging site conditions, where the use of mobile cranes between two parallel flyovers proved impractical. This strategic move showcases L&T's commitment to overcoming project-specific challenges and ensuring the seamless progress of the Chennai Metro Line-5 Phase 2 project.

The twin truss LG crane employed by L&T is equipped with two 22.5m long feeding gantries, each boasting a lifting capacity of 100 MT. The crane's robust design and capabilities are tailored to the unique requirements of the Chennai Metro project, facilitating the efficient erection of U-girders. This approach not only enhances construction precision but also contributes to the overall safety and stability of the elevated viaduct.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) awarded L&T the contract for Package CP10-EV-03, totaling Rs. 1590 crore, in November 2021. The scope of this package encompasses the 10.2 km CMBT – Venugopal Nagar section, a crucial segment of the expansive 116.1 km Phase 2 project. L&T's responsibilities include the construction of elevated stations, viaducts, and associated infrastructure.

The use of the LG crane at Retteri Flyover underscores the complexities involved in executing large-scale metro projects. L&T's innovative solutions, such as casting the U-girders at the Karanodai Casting Yard, demonstrate a commitment to efficiency and precision. With 682 U-girders expected to be cast for both viaducts and stations, the project's execution involves meticulous planning and execution.

L&T's involvement in Package EV-03 spans two disjointed sections – CMBT to Nathamuni Ramp and Retteri Ramp to Venugopal Nagar. These sections encompass a total of 12 stations, contributing significantly to the expansion and connectivity goals of the Chennai Metro network.

The successful launch of U-girders using the LG crane at Retteri Flyover is indicative of collaborative progress in Chennai Metro's Phase 2 project. With a 36-month deadline, L&T's endeavors align with the broader vision of enhancing urban transportation infrastructure in the region.

As the Chennai Metro Line-5 Phase 2 project advances, milestones such as the debut of the launching gantry contribute to the overall success and efficiency of the initiative. The integration of cutting-edge technology, coupled with strategic decision-making, positions the project for future milestones and sets the stage for an advanced metro network in Chennai.

L&T's achievement in commissioning the first launching gantry for Chennai Metro Line-5's Package EV-03 signifies a triumph in engineering and project management. The dynamic approach to overcoming site challenges and the successful use of advanced equipment underscores the commitment to delivering a metro network that aligns with global standards. As Chennai's urban landscape transforms, the Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 project stands as a testament to progress, innovation, and elevated excellence.
