Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The long-pending merger of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) with Indian Railways has taken a significant step forward, with the state governments of Kerala, Goa, and Karnataka agreeing to the move. Maharashtra has also expressed its willingness to support the merger, provided the name Konkan Railway is retained, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed in a statement at the state legislature on Tuesday.
Founded in the 1990s, KRCL is a joint venture involving the Indian Railways and the state governments of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. The corporation has faced limitations in financing and completing major infrastructure projects such as doubling tracks and upgrading assets due to its status as a corporation.
"The merger of Konkan Railway with Indian Railways has been a topic of discussion for several years," Fadnavis explained. "Currently, as a corporation, KRCL has limited financial avenues, which has hindered the progress of important projects. With the merger, Indian Railways can provide better funding and resources to complete these upgrades and expansions."
Maharashtra, while fully supporting the merger, has insisted that the iconic Konkan Railway name remains intact. Fadnavis confirmed that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had agreed to this condition.
The Maharashtra government is expected to formally communicate its approval for the merger to the Union Ministry of Railways in the near future. This development marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency and reach of the Konkan Railway network.
