Integrated trial run begins on the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards operationalizing Mumbai's metro infrastructure, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has commenced integrated trial runs for Mumbai Metro Line 3. This crucial phase involves comprehensive validation of various systems, including rolling stock (coaches), signal telecommunications, tracks, traction, and more. The trial runs are currently underway between the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey, marking a pivotal step towards the realization of Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line.

The integrated trial runs serve as a meticulous testing ground, where each system's functionality and compatibility are scrutinized. From the rolling stock's performance to the efficiency of signal and telecommunication networks, these trials ensure that every component meets the highest safety and operational standards. Following the completion of individual system trials and the acquisition of certifications, the process will proceed to the next stage.

Once all trials are successfully conducted and certifications are obtained, the system will be presented for inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). The CMRS sanction is a critical milestone, paving the way for opening the section for passenger services. This seamless transition from trials to operational services underscores the meticulous planning and execution of Mumbai Metro Line 3.

Mumbai Metro Line 3, the Aqua Line, is poised to revolutionize the city's transit landscape. The 33.5 km long line, when completed, will be Mumbai's first underground metro line. Boasting 27 underground stations and one at-grade station, Line 3 will traverse from Navy Nagar in the far south to Aarey Depot in the north center. Its extensive network will include crucial connections to other metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and Mumbai's International Airport.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 is expected to alleviate road congestion and ease the burden on the Western Line between Bandra and Churchgate. Despite its transformative potential, the project has faced multiple delays. The first phase, initially slated for an earlier opening, is now projected to be operational by June this year. The delays notwithstanding, the completion of Line 3 will be a monumental achievement for Mumbai's urban mobility.

As per MMRC, Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 1 has achieved an overall progress of 94.7%. Have a look at the Phase-I progress from Aarey to BKC of Mumbai Metro Line 3 as of 29th February 2024:-

  • Station and Tunnel Works: 99.2%
  • Overall Station Construction: 97.5%
  • Overall System Works: 83.0%
  • Mainline Track Works: 100%
  • OCS Works: 91.5%

Mumbai Metro Line 3, spearheaded by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), comes with an estimated cost of ₹30,000 crore (US$3.8 billion). Funding for this ambitious project comes from a collaboration of major stakeholders, including MMRCL, Padeco, MMRDA, CREC, and JICA. Notably, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided a substantial soft loan of ₹13,235 crore (US$1.7 billion), emphasizing international collaboration in the project's realization.

The Bandra Kurla Complex to Dharavi section of Line 3 involves a 170-meter-long twin-tunnel passing under the Mithi river, showcasing engineering ingenuity. One tunnel was completed in March 2020. Notably, the metro rail tunnel under the Mithi River stands as the second under-river metro tunnel in India, following the tunnel beneath the Hooghly River on Kolkata Metro Line 2.

French Rolling Stock firm Alstom plays a pivotal role in supplying trains for Mumbai Metro Line 3, emphasizing global collaboration in enhancing Mumbai's public transportation infrastructure.

As the integrated trial runs progress, Mumbai eagerly awaits the realization of Line 3, a transformative project poised to redefine the city's commuting experience.
