Mumbai Metro Updates: MMRDA to complete four key metro corridors by December 2025

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is spearheading an ambitious expansion of the Mumbai Metro network, which is poised to redefine the way the city commutes. Spanning a massive 337.1 kilometers across 12 metro lines, this extensive project aims to connect far-flung suburbs, reduce traffic congestion, and offer a cleaner, faster, and more efficient mode of transport across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Currently, four metro corridors are operational, covering a total distance of 58.9 kilometers. This includes the 12.44 km-long Aqua Line 3, which is Mumbai’s first underground metro. Eight other lines, totaling 165.7 kilometers, are at various stages of construction. The remaining corridors are still in the planning and tendering phases. MMRDA has targeted the completion of four major metro corridors by December 2025, with more phases following in the subsequent years.

One of the key projects nearing completion is the Yellow Line 2B, which runs between DN Nagar (Andheri) and Mandale (Mankhurd). With 83% of the work completed, including track laying and station finishing, the line is expected to open partially by the end of 2025, with a 5.4 km stretch between Chembur and Mandale becoming operational.

The Red Line 9, connecting Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander, is 96% complete. It is being built in two phases, with the first phase between Dahisar and Kashigaon (4.5 km) scheduled for a December 2025 launch, and the second phase to Mira Bhayander expected by the end of 2026. The Red Line 7A, an extension from Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), is progressing slower, with 56% of construction completed so far.

Another critical route under development is the Green Line 4, which stretches from Wadala to Kasarvadavali in Thane. Divided into three phases, the line is currently 79% complete. The first segment from Kasarvadavali to Cadbury Junction is expected to be ready by December 2025, followed by the Cadbury Junction to Gandhi Nagar segment in 2026, and the final stretch to Wadala in 2027. The adjacent Green Line 4A extension, connecting Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, is 89% complete and also expected to open by the end of this year.

Mumbai’s first fully underground metro, the Aqua Line 3 (Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ), is nearly ready, with 94.77% of work completed. The second phase of this line, connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli, is expected to open by mid-April 2025, subject to clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). This 33.5 km line is a major milestone in Mumbai’s urban infrastructure and will significantly reduce travel time between key business districts.

Work is also progressing on the Pink Line 6, which will link Swami Samarth Nagar in Lokhandwala to Vikhroli. Around 78% of the work is complete, with the depot being developed in Kanjurmarg. This line is expected to be operational by December 2026. Meanwhile, the Orange Line 5, connecting Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, has been split into two phases. The Thane to Bhiwandi section, which is nearly 95% complete, is expected to launch by December 2026, while the Bhiwandi to Kalyan stretch has a projected completion date of June 2029.

Another upcoming corridor, Orange Line 12 between Kalyan and Taloja, remains in the early stages, with only 6.5% of the work completed. With 19 stations planned along this line, it is expected to be ready by December 2027. The Green Line 10 extension, connecting Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road), is currently under the tendering process and is scheduled for completion by March 2030.

In addition to these active projects, several new lines are in the pipeline. The Green Line 11 from Wadala to SP Mukherjee Chowk, which spans 12.7 kilometers, is now being handled by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). CIDCO is preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for the Gold Line 8, which will connect Airport Road to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport under a public-private partnership model. Meanwhile, the draft DPR for the 45-kilometer-long Magenta Line 14, running from Kanjurmarg to Badlapur, has been received, and tenders for the environmental impact report have already been issued.

According to MMRDA officials, the corridors expected to open by the end of 2025 include the Mandale to Chembur section of Yellow Line 2B, Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh on Line 4A, Kasarvadavali to Cadbury Junction on Green Line 4, and the 9.77 km stretch from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk on Aqua Line 3.

Commenting on this rapid transformation, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, said, “Mumbai in minutes is no longer a dream — it is becoming a reality. From Mira Bhayander to Thane, areas once considered distant are now being brought closer with world-class metro connectivity. This is not just about infrastructure; it’s about creating a safer, faster, greener, and more inclusive future for urban transport.”

As Mumbai accelerates toward this goal, the metro network is set to reshape the city’s commute, turning long hours in traffic into short, comfortable journeys. With dozens of stations and interchanges soon to be operational, the Mumbai Metro is paving the way for a smarter and more connected metropolis.
