Patna, India (Metro Rail Today): Patna is on the brink of a transformative leap in urban mobility as the much-awaited Patna Metro prepares for its first passenger service. Years of traffic congestion, overburdened roads, and growing pollution have plagued the city, but with the launch of its first metro line just around the corner, residents may soon enjoy a faster, safer, and more comfortable commute.
The upcoming Red Line, part of Phase 1, will initially run between New Patliputra ISBT and Bhootnath, covering key city corridors. Trains will operate at a maximum speed of 40 km/h, offering a significant upgrade to the city's public transport infrastructure. Officials expect the metro service to not only ease vehicular traffic but also project a cleaner and more modern image for Bihar’s capital.
The final and crucial trial run of the Patna Metro is scheduled for September 29, when Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) Janak Kumar Garg and his team will inspect the system. Their assessment will determine whether the line is safe for public use. If the trial is successful and all safety benchmarks are met, passenger operations could begin as early as the first week of October.
Urban Development and Housing Minister Jivesh Kumar has confirmed that the inauguration will take place immediately following CMRS clearance. While earlier CMRS inspections had noted some minor technical issues, metro officials have since worked diligently to resolve them ahead of the final trial.
Progress at all three Red Line stations — including Zerodol Mill and ISBT — is rapidly nearing completion. Ticket counters, escalators, lifts, and entry/exit gates have already been installed. Although finishing every detail by September 30 presents logistical challenges, authorities remain confident that the timeline will not hinder the official launch.
"The upcoming launch of Patna Metro signifies a long-awaited transformation for the city’s transit infrastructure," said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “This is not just a mobility project; it's a symbol of progress, sustainability, and a better quality of life for Patna’s citizens. It will set the benchmark for modern urban development in Bihar.”
Beyond easing congestion, the metro promises to reshape daily commuting for thousands of residents, offering a reliable alternative to road transport. The project is being seen as a catalyst for urban renewal, expected to improve air quality and encourage more sustainable modes of travel across the city.
With the final trial just days away, anticipation is growing across Patna. Should everything proceed as planned, the city is poised to enter a new era of metro-driven mobility starting early next month—fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of its people and placing Patna firmly on the map of India’s growing metro cities.
