Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Phase II of Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Extension

Ahmedabad, India (Metro Rail Today): On Monday, September 16, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated Phase II of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro extension, marking a significant milestone in Gujarat’s transportation infrastructure. The new extension enhances connectivity between the twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, offering a modern, efficient transit solution for commuters.

In a ceremonial gesture, Prime Minister Modi waved the green flag to mark the launch of the extended Metro route. The Prime Minister traveled aboard the new Metro service from Sector 1 station in Gandhinagar to the GIFT City, accompanied by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. During the journey, Modi interacted with passengers, including students, showcasing the accessible and inclusive nature of the new transit option.

Details of Phase II Extension

Phase II of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro extension covers a substantial 21 kilometers, incorporating eight new stations along its route. This expansion aims to improve transportation efficiency and connectivity across key locations, including GNLU, PDEU, GIFT City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva, Infocity, and Sector 1.

Developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) in collaboration with both the state and central governments, this project represents a significant leap in Gujarat’s metro network. The extension from Motera to Gandhinagar’s Sector 1 will link crucial hubs, notably GIFT City, which will benefit professionals, students, and tourists by providing a seamless and rapid transit experience.

Project Funding and Economic Impact

The total cost of Phase II is estimated at Rs 5,384 crore. Funding for this ambitious project was secured through loans from international financial agencies, including the French Development Agency (AFD) and the German development bank KfW.

The extended Metro route promises to drastically cut travel times between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. For instance, the journey from APMC to GIFT City will now take less than an hour, with fares starting at Rs 35, making it an affordable and convenient option for daily commuters.

Enhanced Connectivity and Benefits

The addition of Phase II significantly addresses the connectivity challenges between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. With two major metro corridors now operational in Ahmedabad, the new extension resolves long-standing transportation issues, facilitating easier access to important destinations and improving overall urban mobility.
