Railway Ministry approves ₹383.78 crore Vande Bharat Maintenance Depot at Tatanagar

New Delhi, India (Rail & Metro Today): Tatanagar Railway Station is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with the Railway Board granting final approval for the construction of a state-of-the-art Vande Bharat Coach Maintenance Depot at an estimated cost of ₹383.78 crore. The proposed facility is expected to strengthen Tatanagar’s role in the maintenance and operation of India’s semi-high-speed Vande Bharat train fleet and support the introduction of additional services from the Iron City.

According to the information shared by MP Bidyut Baran Mahato, the Railway Board has approved the project after reviewing the technical proposal submitted by South Eastern Railway’s Chakradharpur Division. The official approval letter was reportedly forwarded to the MP by Sumit Kumar, Director of Projects and Development, Railway Board.

The proposed depot will be developed in the Loco Colony area of Tatanagar. Under the approved plan, the existing coaching depot will be expanded and upgraded to create a modern maintenance yard equipped to handle Vande Bharat trainsets.

Hi-Tech Maintenance Facility for Vande Bharat Trains

The new Vande Bharat Coach Maintenance Depot is planned as a specialised facility for technical inspection, regular maintenance and rapid washing of Vande Bharat trains, including both chair car and sleeper variants.

The development is significant as Vande Bharat services require specialised maintenance infrastructure, modern inspection systems and dedicated facilities to ensure operational reliability. The proposed depot at Tatanagar could therefore provide the infrastructure required to support an expanded Vande Bharat service network from the city.

At present, Vande Bharat services are reported to operate from Tatanagar towards Patna and Brahmapur. According to MP Bidyut Baran Mahato, the new maintenance facility would help address infrastructure constraints that could otherwise limit the introduction of additional Vande Bharat services connecting Tatanagar with major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Bengaluru.

However, the construction of the depot itself does not constitute an approval or announcement of specific new Vande Bharat routes to these destinations. Such services would depend on separate operational and scheduling decisions by Indian Railways.

Proposal for Four Additional Platforms

Alongside the Vande Bharat maintenance depot, MP Bidyut Baran Mahato has also reportedly submitted a proposal to the Railway Board for the construction of four additional railway platforms and loop lines at Tatanagar under the PM Gati Shakti framework.

The proposed platform and loop-line infrastructure is estimated at ₹482 crore and is intended to help reduce operational pressure at Tatanagar Railway Station. The proposal is separate from the ₹383.78-crore Vande Bharat maintenance depot and, based on the information available, its approval status has not been stated.

Additional platforms and associated railway infrastructure could provide greater flexibility for train operations and improve the station’s ability to handle additional services as passenger and operational requirements increase.

Tatanagar’s Growing Role in Modern Rail Connectivity

Tatanagar is one of the important railway stations in eastern India and serves the industrial city of Jamshedpur as well as the surrounding industrial and mining belt. The development of dedicated Vande Bharat maintenance infrastructure would add a specialised capability to the station’s existing railway facilities.

The project also comes at a time when Indian Railways is expanding the Vande Bharat ecosystem beyond conventional chair-car services, with sleeper trainsets being introduced as part of the next phase of semi-high-speed passenger rail development.

A dedicated Vande Bharat facility at Tatanagar can strengthen the supporting ecosystem for modern train operations while also creating opportunities for local employment, skill development and associated railway services,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group.

According to MP Mahato, the project is expected to provide a boost to industrial and technological development in the Chakradharpur Railway Division and generate direct as well as indirect employment opportunities in the region.

The MP has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the General Manager of South Eastern Railway and the DRM of Chakradharpur Division for their support in advancing the project.

With the Railway Board’s reported final approval of the ₹383.78-crore depot, Tatanagar is poised to add a dedicated maintenance facility for Vande Bharat trains. If the proposed additional platforms and loop lines also receive approval, the combined infrastructure expansion could further enhance the station’s capacity to support modern passenger rail services and future network growth.
