Kochi, India (Metro Rail Today): Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has awarded two major infrastructure contracts for its Phase-2 expansion, marking a significant step in strengthening passenger amenities and station infrastructure across upcoming metro corridors. The contracts cover the supply and installation of heavy-duty escalators and elevators, reinforcing KMRL’s focus on accessibility, safety, and seamless passenger movement.
As Kochi Metro expands its network under Phase-2, vertical transportation systems are emerging as a critical component of station design and operations. To address high passenger volumes and ensure efficient circulation within stations, KMRL has finalised contracts that include end-to-end responsibilities—from design and manufacturing to installation, testing, and commissioning.
KMRL has issued a Letter of Acceptance to Schindler India Private Limited for the supply of heavy-duty escalators for Phase-2 stations. The contract carries a value of ₹30.60 crore and has an execution period of 730 days. These escalators are designed for continuous, high-load operations typical of busy metro environments and are expected to significantly improve passenger flow during peak hours once the new corridors become operational.
In a parallel development, Johnson Lifts Private Limited has been awarded the contract for supplying Heavy Duty Machine Room Less (MRL) elevators. Valued at ₹12.68 crore, this contract also spans 730 days, ensuring alignment with overall Phase-2 construction timelines. The adoption of MRL elevator technology highlights KMRL’s emphasis on modern, space-efficient solutions that are well-suited to urban metro stations while offering improved energy efficiency and maintenance benefits.
Together, the escalator and elevator contracts account for a combined investment of over ₹43 crore, underscoring the scale of infrastructure being put in place for Kochi Metro’s next phase of growth. These systems will play a crucial role in enhancing station accessibility for senior citizens, persons with reduced mobility, and daily commuters, while also supporting smooth interchange and circulation within stations.
The latest contract awards reflect KMRL’s broader strategy of deploying reliable, heavy-duty infrastructure that matches the city’s growing ridership demands. As Phase-2 progresses from planning to execution, such awards represent tangible milestones in delivering a modern, commuter-friendly metro system for Kochi.
With key vertical mobility packages now awarded, Kochi Metro Rail Limited continues to move steadily toward timely implementation of Phase-2, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable urban mobility and world-class public transport infrastructure.
