Visakhapatnam, India (Metro Rail Today): The Union Government has officially approved the appointment of SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd. for updating the Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMPs) for the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada metro rail projects. This move follows the submission of the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) in December 2024, which are awaiting final clearance.
According to a government release, the Andhra Pradesh Government had sanctioned the DPRs for the construction of two major metro rail projects: the Visakhapatnam Metro Rail, spanning 46.23 km across three corridors at an estimated ₹11,498 crore, and the Vijayawada Metro Rail, covering 38.40 km across two corridors in Phase-I, with a projected cost of ₹11,009 crore. Both DPRs were submitted to the Central Government for approval on December 5, 2024.
However, the Union Government requested revisions to the CMPs, which were originally prepared in 2019. In response, the Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRCL) called for tenders to select a consultant for updating the mobility plans. SYSTRA MVA Consulting emerged as the successful bidder among the contenders, including RITES Limited and Assystem (formerly L&T EIL).
On March 17, 2025, the Union Government gave its approval for the appointment of SYSTRA MVA Consulting as the official consultant for both metro projects. Following this, the Andhra Pradesh Government instructed APMRCL’s Managing Director, N.P. Ramakrishna Reddy, to finalize the agreement with SYSTRA and ensure the completion of the CMP update within three months.
The Letter of Award was officially issued to SYSTRA MVA Consulting on March 19, marking a key milestone in the progress of the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada metro rail projects.
This step is crucial for the timely and efficient execution of the metro rail projects, which are expected to ease urban transport congestion and promote sustainable growth in Andhra Pradesh's major cities.
