Copenhagen, Denmark (Metro Rail Today): The competition to operate and maintain the Copenhagen Metro has entered a critical stage as three international bidders have submitted offers for the prestigious contract, set to begin in 2029.
According to Metroselskabet, the public authority overseeing the network, bids were received from:
Metro Service (Italy’s ATM Group) – the current operator since the system’s opening in 2002
RATP Dev – the international subsidiary of France’s RATP Group
Keolis – a global mobility provider partly owned by SNCF, France’s national railway company
The upcoming contract will cover operation and maintenance (O&M) for the entire Copenhagen Metro system, which currently includes Lines M1, M2, M3 (Cityringen), and M4, and is set to expand further with new sections of M4 and future projects under development.
The current O&M contract, held by Metro Service (ATM), will expire in 2029. The new contract is expected to include performance benchmarks, passenger service targets, and provisions for operational integration across the growing automated network, which operates at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), or fully driverless.
Contract award is expected in late 2026, allowing for a multi-year transition before the current agreement concludes. Copenhagen’s metro continues to rank among Europe’s most reliable and modern rapid transit systems, with daily ridership steadily rising and international best practices guiding its future expansions.
