Titagarh Rail Systems Bags ₹2,481 Crore Rolling Stock Contract for Mumbai Metro Line 5
Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. has been identified as the lowest bidder for supplying a comprehensive package of critical systems for Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line), according to sources familiar with the bidding process conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The contract, known as Package CA-241, covers the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of five key systems collectively referred to as RSTPD:
Rolling stock: 22 trains, each with 6 coaches
CBTC signaling and train control (S&TC)
Telecommunication systems
Platform screen doors (PSDs)
Machinery & plant (M&P) for Kasheli Depot
The 24.9 km Line-5 is divided into two phases:
Phase 1: Kapurbawadi – Kasheli – Dhamankar Naka
Phase 2: Dhamankar Naka – Bhiwandi – Kalyan APMC
The tender was floated in February 2024 with an estimated contract value of ₹2,640.72 crore. Of the three firms that submitted bids, only two qualified for the financial evaluation stage, with Titagarh emerging on top. The identity of its partners for signaling, telecom, and other sub-systems remains undisclosed at this time and is expected to be revealed upon contract finalization.
The project’s design and build component will be funded through a proposed USD 186.57 million loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Meanwhile, MMRDA will finance the comprehensive maintenance component, which spans 17 years, including a 2-year Defect Liability Maintenance Period (DLP).
The contract’s implementation is expected to take 50 months (approx. 4.2 years) from signing. According to earlier tender documents, MMRDA originally planned prototype train delivery by week 56, followed by additional batches at weeks 78 and 96. However, delivery timelines have been relaxed through subsequent addendums.
If awarded, this will mark Titagarh Rail Systems’ fifth major metro contract in India, strengthening its position in the urban rail sector. The company has previously secured:
108 coaches for Mumbai Metro Line 6 (2025)
102 coaches for Pune Metro (2019)
30 coaches for Ahmedabad Metro (2023)
72 coaches for Surat Metro (2023)
204 coaches under a JV with CRRC for Bangalore Metro’s 4RS-DM contract (2022)
Despite progress in procurement, the commercial launch of Line 5 remains distant. Given the current pace, operations are unlikely to begin before Q3 2027.
This development is a crucial milestone in the push to bring modern, efficient, and integrated public transport infrastructure to Mumbai’s expanding suburban regions, especially in the densely populated Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor.
