Gandhinagar, India (Metro Rail Today): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad Metro, flagging off metro services from Mahatma Mandir Metro Station in Gandhinagar, marking a major boost to urban connectivity in Gujarat’s twin cities.
Sharing glimpses of the inauguration on X, the Prime Minister said, “Our commitment to boosting Ahmedabad’s infrastructure is visible in the various development works initiated. Today, the remaining stretch of Phase 2 of Ahmedabad Metro from Sector 10A to Mahatma Mandir was inaugurated. This will boost ‘Ease of Living’ for the people of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.”
According to the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the inauguration opens a 7.8-km stretch of the metro corridor for public use. As part of this phase, seven stations—Mahatma Mandir, Sector-24, Sector-16, Old Secretariat, Akshardham, Secretariat and Sector-10—have become operational, significantly expanding the region’s modern public transport network.
With this commissioning, commuters can now travel seamlessly along the 28.25-km metro corridor connecting Motera in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. Officials said the improved connectivity will ensure faster, safer and more comfortable travel, while easing road congestion between the two cities.
The Gujarat CMO said the metro project aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of modern, sustainable urban mobility and supports the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Industry leaders have also welcomed the development. Mrs. Mamta Shah, Managing Director & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said the completion of Phase 2 represents a decisive step in India’s metro-led urban transformation. “The Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro demonstrates how integrated mass transit can reshape regional mobility, reduce dependence on private vehicles and support sustainable urban growth. Such projects create long-term economic value while improving daily life for citizens,” she said.
A major technological highlight of Phase 2 is the installation of Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) across all 22 stations. The PSD systems were supplied, installed and commissioned by Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric Co., Ltd., enhancing passenger safety, operational reliability and station environment control. Officials said the achievement reflects meticulous planning, strong engineering capability and close coordination among all stakeholders.
With Phase 2 now fully operational, the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting public transport usage and setting new benchmarks for sustainable urban mobility in India.
