Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): The track construction work for the Kanpur Metro Rail Project is advancing rapidly, with significant progress witnessed between Naveen Market and Chunniganj Station. Following the completion of tunnel construction in the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section of Corridor 1 (IIT to Naubasta), track construction is now underway at a brisk pace.
Recent developments include the completion of track casting on the 'Up-line' between Bada Chauraha and Naveen Market, followed by the initiation of track slab casting between Naveen Market and Chunniganj Station. This marks substantial progress in track construction across the designated section.
Previously, track construction was successfully completed in both the 'Up-line' and 'Downline' tunnels spanning approximately 1 km between Nayaganj and Bada Chauraha metro stations. Similarly, track construction in the 'Up-line' tunnel between Bada Chauraha and Naveen Market has been finalized.
Prior to the commencement of track slab casting in the 'Up-line' tunnel between Naveen Market and Chuniganj station, rail segments and the Flash Butt Weld (FBW) plant were lowered into the underground section from a designated cut-out near the under-construction Chunniganj Metro station. Subsequently, rail welding and laying operations were executed in the 730-meter (approx.) long 'Up-line' tunnel from Chuniganj station to Naveen Market. The casting process for track slabs under these railway tracks has commenced as of today.
Kanpur Metro utilizes head-hardened rails for its tracks, ensuring durability and longevity. These rails undergo a specialized heat treatment process, resulting in higher hardness compared to standard rails, thereby extending their lifecycle. Additionally, the metro tracks are ballast-less, requiring minimal maintenance and featuring a mass-spring system to absorb vibration and noise. Following track slab casting, provisions for Derailment guards and arrangements for installing the Third rail will be implemented.
Construction activities for Corridor-1 of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project are progressing swiftly, encompassing the Chuniganj-Nayaganj underground section, Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section, and the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section.
