Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): The engineers of Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) have commenced tunneling work for 12-km twine tunnel of Corridor 3 of Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase 2 on 16th February 2023 at Greenways Road Station. The first Tunnel Boring Machine (S-1327A), nicknamed TBM Kaveri, has started construction work under Package TU-02 of Phase 2.
"Tunneling commenced at Greenways Road Station in Corridor 3 contract TU-02 Kellys to Taramani) of Phase –II Chennai Metro Rail Project, Today (16/02/2023)," twitted Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).
In May 2021, CMRL had awarded a contract worth Rs 2,385.00 crore to Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) for construction of 12-km underground stretch of Line 3 (Madhavaram-SIPCOT) of Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase 2. The scope of work includes design & construction of approximately 12 km twin bored tunnels (total = 24 km) from Kellys Station to Taramani Road Junction and the construction of diaphragm walls, entry/exit structures of Chetpet station, Royapettah Government Hospital Station, Thiruvanmiyu Station, and part diaphragm wall of Greenways Road Station, including launching and retrieval shafts at the above stations.
In July 2022, TBM Kaveri had passed factory acceptance tests (FAT) at Herrenknecht’s local facility centre in Chennai and L&T team had started lowering of its parts at Greenways TBM Launch Shaft in January 2023. This is the 4th of 23 TBMs to be deployed in Phase 2 to start tunneling after TBM S96 & TBM S97 of Tata Projects towards Madhavaran High Road and TBM S98 towards Venugopal Nagar. L&T has to complete this package in 42 month deadline.
The another Tunnel Boring Machine (nicknamed TBM Adyar, S-1326A) will begin tunneling works to build the parallel tunnel under this contract package in coming months. Apart from these TBMs, L&T will deploy two more TBMs.
The 45.813 km (19.09 km elevated & 26.72 km underground) long Corridor 3 of Chenani Metro will conenct Madhavaram to SIPCOT with 50 metro stations.
