Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major push for urban mobility and infrastructure development, the Maharashtra Cabinet has cleared several high-value transport projects, including two new metro corridors for Mumbai and Thane. The approvals came during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday.
The highlight of the announcement is Metro Line-11, a ₹23,487 crore elevated and underground corridor extending 17.51 km from Wadala to the Gateway of India, passing through dense neighborhoods like Nagpada and Bhendi Bazaar. Once operational, the line will integrate with key urban transport modes — Metro Lines 3 and 4, the Monorail at Wadala, and suburban stations including Byculla and CSMT.
The line will be designed, constructed, and operated by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) and is expected to significantly ease congestion in South Mumbai while improving last-mile connectivity for daily commuters and tourists alike.
Complementing Mumbai’s project is a 29-km circular metro corridor in Thane, approved at a cost of ₹12,200 crore. Spearheaded by the Thane Municipal Corporation, the ring metro is a flagship initiative of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde aimed at decongesting Thane’s core areas and connecting key residential and commercial zones.
Providing an industry perspective on this development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “The simultaneous approval of Mumbai Metro Line-11 and the Thane Ring Metro signals Maharashtra’s ambitious shift towards a seamless, multi-modal urban transport ecosystem. These projects are not just about connectivity, but about transforming city living and boosting economic activity in the region.”
In addition to the metro expansions, the Cabinet greenlit a ₹6,430 crore, 25-km six-lane elevated road connecting Thane and Mira-Bhayander to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The road will feature six interchanges and is expected to reduce travel time from 90 minutes to just 30.
Another key approval was for a third and fourth suburban rail line between Pune and Lonavala, sanctioned at ₹5,100 crore and to be executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation. The double-line upgrade is set to ease congestion and increase frequency on this heavily traveled corridor.
Other notable approvals include:
Extensions of Pune Metro corridors, including Swargate–Katraj and Pimpri–Chinchwad to Nigdi
Additions to Nagpur Metro Phase-2, a proposed international business hub, and a township project
New metro sub-corridors such as Nal Stop–Warje and Swargate–Balaji Nagar in Pune
With a cumulative investment exceeding ₹47,000 crore, the state government’s recent decisions underscore its commitment to fast-tracking critical mobility infrastructure ahead of growing urban demands. Construction timelines and tendering processes for the approved projects are expected to commence in phases over the coming months.
