Mumbai, India(Metro Rail Today): The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has signed a major agreement with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited for the design, supply, and construction of track and related works for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project in Maharashtra. The contract also includes testing and commissioning of the double-line track system over a 157-km stretch between Mumbai and Zaroli village on the Maharashtra–Gujarat border.
The scope of work covers track laying for four upcoming stations in Maharashtra and the rolling stock depot at Thane. With this development, all three packages for track construction under India’s first high-speed rail project have been awarded to Indian companies, further boosting domestic expertise in advanced rail technologies.
Commenting on this milestone, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said:
“The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is not just about speed but about building India’s capabilities in world-class infrastructure. Awarding this contract to an Indian company highlights the growing self-reliance of the country in adopting and executing high-speed rail technology, which will serve as a benchmark for future projects.”
The project will deploy the ballast-less slab track system, a proven technology used in Japan’s Shinkansen network. This system is composed of four main components – reinforced concrete (RC) track bed, cement asphalt mortar (CAM), pre-cast track slabs, and high-performance rails with fasteners – ensuring safety, precision, and durability.
In collaboration with the Japan Railway Technical Service (JARTS), NHSRCL has been conducting extensive training programs for Indian engineers, supervisors, and technicians. Over 436 professionals have already been trained in Gujarat under earlier packages (T-2 and T-3), covering 15 specialized modules including track slab manufacturing and CAM installation. Similar training initiatives will be rolled out in Maharashtra before the commencement of track work.
According to NHSRCL’s latest progress update (as of September 8, 2025), construction is advancing rapidly:
320 km of viaduct completed
397 km of pier works and 408 km of pier foundations completed
17 river bridges, 9 steel bridges, and 5 pre-stressed concrete bridges completed
4 lakh noise barriers installed across 203 km
202 track km of track bed construction finished
1,800 overhead electrification (OHE) masts erected covering 44 km of viaduct
Work underway on the 21 km tunnel between BKC and Shilphata, along with 7 mountain tunnels in Palghar district
Station construction in Gujarat is at an advanced stage, while in Maharashtra, work has commenced on three elevated stations and the base slab at the Mumbai underground station.
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is regarded as a game-changer for India’s transport sector, promising to cut travel time between the two financial hubs to just about two hours. With track construction in both Gujarat and Maharashtra gaining momentum, the project is moving closer to its much-anticipated launch.
