Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recently opened the technical bids for the procurement of 60E1 – 1080 grade head-hardened rails for Corridor 3 & 5 of Chennai Metro Rail Project, Phase 2.
As per information shared by CMRL, only two bidders from Japan - Mitsui & Co. Ltd and Ohmi Industries Ltd have submitetd their bids for the supply of 60E1 Profile, 1080 Grade (Head Hardened) Rails conforming to IRS T-12-2009 for Corridor 3 & 5 of Chennai Metro's Phase 2.
However, it is very surprising moment that Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. (JSPL) didn’t bid for this contract package. This is only Indian rail manufacturer capable of producing these special tracks from their Raigarh plant. They are delivering 2,308 tonnes of HH rails to Kolkata Metro’s Line-2.
The corridor 3 (Purple line) of Chennai Metro Rail project stretches 45.8 km from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri Sipcot 2. The line will consist of 48 stations, out of which 29 are underground and 19 are elevated.
The corridor 5 (Red Line) Chennai Metro Rail Project stretches 47 km from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur. The line will consist of 48 stations, out of which 6 are underground, 1 at grade and 41 are elevated.
Funding for a portion of Chennai Metro in Phase II (52.01 km, i.e. Madhavaram – Sholinganallur of Corridor 3 and Madhavaram – CMBT of Corridor 5) has been tied up with JICA as State Sector Project.
For balance portion of funding (66.89 km), the screening committee of DEA has accorded in principle approval for funding of entire Corridor-4 and balance section of Corridor 3 & 5 and posed for funding from Multilateral Banks i.e ADB, AIIB & NDB.
