Baghdad, Iraq (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Iraq’s transportation sector, the designs for the Baghdad Metro project have been finalized, marking a crucial step towards the realization of this ambitious infrastructure endeavor. Nasser Al-Asadi, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s advisor on transport affairs, revealed on April 4, 2024 that the comprehensive designs have been completed, heralding a new era of modernization for the capital city.
The Baghdad Metro project, encompassing 64 stations spanning across 148 kilometers, aims to significantly enhance the city’s transportation network, covering approximately 85 percent of Baghdad, including key areas such as holy sites, hospitals, colleges, and tourism districts.
Haider Makiya, the Chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), announced earlier in February the commencement of the bidding process for the long-awaited Baghdad Metro project. With an estimated budget of US$2.5 billion, this project is poised to be a transformative addition to Iraq's infrastructure landscape.
International companies keen on participating in the Baghdad Metro project can submit their bids through the NIC website, opening doors for global collaboration and expertise infusion in Iraq's transportation sector.
Speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate the investment opportunities associated with the Baghdad Metro, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasized the project's pivotal role in addressing the burgeoning transportation needs of a city with a population exceeding eight million. Al-Sudani underscored that the project signifies a monumental shift in Baghdad's transportation paradigm.
A notable contender for the project, China Railway, showcased its capabilities during a meeting with Prime Minister Al-Sudani last month. The company, currently involved in the Nisour Square development project in central Baghdad, demonstrated its expertise and readiness to contribute to the successful execution of the Baghdad Metro project, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The interest in the Baghdad Metro project extends beyond borders, with 26 multinational corporations from countries such as China, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Qatar expressing keen interest in participating in the project's execution, highlighting its global significance and appeal.
The journey towards realizing the Baghdad Metro project has been marked by various milestones and collaborations over the years. From the signing of memorandums of understanding for urban rail projects to the recent announcements of groundbreaking work, the project has garnered attention and support from international stakeholders.
In December 2022, the Baghdad Metro project received a significant boost with its inclusion in the 2023 Ministry of Transport budget. Set to encompass 14 stations and spanning 31 kilometers in length, the metro's construction is slated to commence in either 2023 or 2024, with further announcements expected in the fourth quarter of 2024.
As Iraq gears up to embark on this transformative journey in its transportation sector, the Baghdad Metro project holds immense promise in reshaping the urban landscape and enhancing connectivity for millions of residents.
