Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards enhancing its metro services, Chennai Metro Rail Limited has inked a supplementary contract valued at Rs 269 crore with Alstom, a renowned French multinational rolling stock manufacturer. The agreement entails the procurement of an additional 10 sets of driverless trains, reinforcing the metro's capabilities for its upcoming phase-II operations.
The contract, signed by Rajesh Chaturvedi, director (Systems and Operations) of Chennai Metro Rail, and Rajeev Joisar, commercial director of India & South Asia at Alstom Transport India Limited, encompasses a comprehensive scope. It includes the supply of driverless trains, encompassing design, manufacture, testing, commissioning of standard gauge metro rolling stock, personnel training, spare parts supply, and defect liability. The anticipated completion time for this ambitious undertaking is approximately 28 months.
The newly procured trains are slated to be maintained and operated from the maintenance depot currently under construction in Poonamallee of Metro Corridor-4. This strategic move aligns with the city's vision to bolster metro connectivity and streamline operations efficiently.
This supplementary contract is a logical extension of the original agreement awarded to Alstom Transport India Limited on November 17, 2022. The initial contract involved the supply of 26 driverless train sets, each comprising a three-car formation, totaling 78 cars. With the recent procurement, the total number of ordered trains will increase to 36, featuring three-car formations and totaling 108 cars.
The introduction of additional driverless trains not only signifies an expansion of the metro fleet but also underscores Chennai Metro Rail's commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology for a seamless commuting experience. The incorporation of driverless technology aligns with global trends in metro rail operations, enhancing efficiency and passenger safety.
As Chennai prepares to augment its metro services with an extended and technologically advanced fleet, the city anticipates a positive impact on overall commuter experience. The increased capacity and efficiency of the metro system contribute to a more sustainable and convenient public transportation option for residents and visitors alike.
Chennai Metro Rail's Rs 269-crore contract with Alstom marks a significant milestone in the city's efforts to modernize and expand its metro infrastructure. The addition of 10 sets of driverless trains not only augments operational capabilities but also positions Chennai as a city at the forefront of innovative and efficient public transportation solutions.
