Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant push for Gurugram's urban development, Haryana's Forest and Industries Minister, Rao Narbir Singh, has directed metro authorities to finalize the alignment for the much-awaited Gurugram metro line within one month. The proposed metro line will link Millennium City metro station, Old Gurugram, and Cyber City, enhancing connectivity across the region.
During an inspection of the metro alignment route with officials from Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Singh emphasized the importance of minimizing disruption to residents and businesses during construction. He instructed authorities to develop a detailed plan to keep vital services—such as drainage, water supply, sewage, and electricity—intact throughout the project.
Spanning 28.5 km and including 27 stations, the metro expansion project is a vital development for the region. Eight of these stations will be model stations, and the project will also feature a metro depot. The total cost is pegged at ₹5,452.72 crore, with ₹896.19 crore funded by the central government and ₹4,556.53 crore allocated by the Haryana government.
In a review meeting, Singh pressed for the acceleration of work while ensuring minimal disruptions to the city’s infrastructure. He also called for a robust traffic diversion plan to prevent traffic chaos during the construction phase and urged GMDA officials to coordinate the simultaneous construction of flyovers and underpasses. This parallel effort will ease congestion and support smooth movement during the metro construction.
Survey work for the metro’s alignment and several stations has already been completed, with the identification and shifting of utilities underway, according to a senior GMDA official. Regular meetings are being held between GMRL and GMDA to ensure that the project progresses efficiently.
The foundation stone for the Gurugram metro expansion was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Rewari on February 16, 2024. Construction is set to begin on May 1, 2025, following the directions of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The Haryana government has established a special executive committee and a coordination committee comprising multiple agencies to address any implementation challenges that may arise.
With these developments, the Gurugram metro expansion is on track to transform the city’s public transportation landscape, offering faster, more reliable commuting options for residents and businesses alike.
