Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major development for urban mobility in Pune, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has officially invited bids for the first civil contract of the Swargate–Katraj extension of the Pune Metro’s Purple Line. This significant underground stretch spans 5.464 kilometers and will add three new stations to the expanding metro network.
According to the tender notice, the scope of work involves the design and construction of underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj, along with associated tunnel works under Stage I. Stage II will include the construction of additional underground stations at Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar. This project marks a crucial phase in the expansion of the metro system toward the southern suburbs of Pune, which are currently underserved by rapid transit options.
The tendering process started on April 9, 2025, and the submission deadline is May 21, 2025. The pre-bid meeting is scheduled for April 25, 2025, offering interested contractors an opportunity to clarify project-related queries. The tender ID is P1A-UGC(R)/2025(ICB), and the Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) has been fixed at ₹8.43 crore. The awarded contractor will be expected to complete the work within 42 months from the issuance of the Letter of Acceptance (LoA).
The Swargate–Katraj extension is a key part of the broader expansion of the Pune Metro’s Purple Line, which is steadily becoming a backbone for citywide connectivity. Currently, the Purple Line is operational from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate, covering 16.59 kilometers and serving 13 stations. In September 2024, the metro line was extended by 3.3 kilometers from Civil Court to Swargate, adding three new underground stations and bringing the system closer to the city center.
To the north, the Purple Line is also being extended from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi, a stretch of 4.519 kilometers that is currently under construction. Meanwhile, the newly tendered Swargate–Katraj extension will further extend the metro southward, enhancing connectivity for densely populated residential and commercial zones such as Market Yard, Bibwewadi, and Katraj.
With Pune’s population and vehicular traffic steadily increasing, the metro's expansion is seen as vital to reducing congestion and improving travel times across the city. The extension toward Katraj is especially significant, as it will serve commuters along one of Pune’s busiest road corridors and connect major residential areas to the core city.
The bidding process for this underground segment signals the start of what promises to be one of the most technically complex and transformative phases of the Pune Metro project. Once completed, the Purple Line will span from Bhakti Shakti in the north to Katraj in the south, seamlessly connecting Pune’s major commercial, residential, and institutional zones.
Stay tuned for updates as Maha-Metro moves forward with the tendering and construction of this critical metro infrastructure.
