Delhi-Meerut RRTS viaduct on Meerut section nearing completion stage

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The construction of viaducts for Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor is now in its final stage. The current focus is on completing the section before the last station in Meerut, 'Modipuram.' With only a few spans remaining between Meerut North Station and Modipuram, a route diversion has been implemented for about a month.

This diversion affects a short stretch of 100-150 meters on the Modipuram bypass, from the Melange Mall cut to the SDS Global cut on National Highway-58. During this period, only one lane will be available for vehicles for to and fro movement of the vehicles. However, this diversion is confined to a small zone and every effort will be done to maintain smooth traffic flow.

While the diversion is in effect, additional civil works will continue, including the lifting and placement of viaduct segments using the Tarini launching gantry. A trial was conducted on Thursday, August 8, to assess the effectiveness of the diversion, with the traffic police overseeing the process. Following the successful trial, the route diversion is being done for a month’s period. Efforts are being made to complete the remaining construction work within this timeframe to minimize disruptions for the public. The traffic police have approved the arrangements.

Tarini (launching gantry), which is currently in use near Modipuram RRTS station, plays a crucial role in lifting and connecting segments of the viaduct, each weighing approximately 50-60 tonnes. As construction progresses, safety measures for road users and drivers remain a top priority, necessitating occasional route diversions.

The NCRTC has implemented various measures to ensure smooth traffic flow during the diversion. These include enhanced lighting for nighttime traffic and the deployment of traffic marshals. These marshals are equipped with the necessary safety gear and tools i.e. Red and green flags, whistles, reflective jackets, helmets, and lighting batons to manage the traffic with the help of local traffic police. Crash barriers have also been installed to further ensure safety.

The Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor's viaduct construction is nearing completion, with the entire elevated viaduct expected to be finished by next month. In Meerut, the tunnel construction for all three underground stations has already been completed, with only final touches remaining. Meerut residents can look forward to the commencement of the Namo Bharat train service and the convenience of metro services within the city. The project is on track to be fully operational within the designated timeframe.
