Pueblo, United States (Metro Rail Today): In a major development for the global rail sector, MxV Rail and the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at driving innovation, strengthening research capabilities, and fast-tracking technological advancements across heavy haul and high-speed rail systems. The agreement was formalized during Rail Research Week 2025, marking one of the most significant international collaborations in recent years.
The partnership will integrate the strengths of two of the world’s most advanced rail research bodies. By coordinating their testing facilities, engineering competencies, and institutional expertise, MxV Rail and KRRI plan to undertake a new generation of mission-critical initiatives. This includes shared use of rolling stock, joint digital data and asset management research, exchange of personnel for technical knowledge transfer, and co-development of global thought leadership through seminars, training programs, and symposia.
The collaboration is an outcome of Rail Research Week 2025, where MxV Rail hosted the International Heavy Haul Association Conference and the World Congress on Railway Research for the first time as a combined global event. The gathering brought together leading experts to discuss breakthroughs in digitalisation, sustainability, heavy haul efficiency, and high-speed rail innovation.
Reflecting on the expanded partnership, Dr. Myung Sagong, President of KRRI, said the agreement builds on a strong foundation established in 2018. “Through closer collaboration between our two organizations, we expect to see enhanced joint responses to the digital transformation of the railway industry driven by the sharing of information, knowledge, and experience; strengthened practical cooperation in testing, certification, and the use of test tracks; and improved national competitiveness through proactive and mutually beneficial responses to changes in the global railway environment,” he noted.
MxV Rail President and CEO Kari Gonzales emphasized that innovation in rail is ultimately about people and progress. “Our teams have historically worked on carbon-neutral and digital technologies together, and both organizations recognize that, along with our technical prowess, people are the heart of what we do. With every advancement in the safety, efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of the railways, we improve communities around the globe. We are going to do great things together!”
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said the collaboration represents a future-defining moment for global rail innovation. “The MxV Rail–KRRI partnership underscores the growing need for collective research strength in the face of rapid digital transformation. Joint advancements in heavy haul and high-speed technologies will play a critical role in shaping safer, greener, and more efficient railway systems worldwide,” she said.
This alliance positions both organizations to develop stronger, more resilient research ecosystems as the rail industry evolves to meet the demands of automation, decarbonisation, and digital integration. With enhanced cooperation on testing, certification, and data-driven rail technologies, the partnership is set to accelerate innovation pipelines and reinforce global competitiveness in the coming decade.
By combining decades of engineering leadership, state-of-the-art facilities, and a shared mission for safer and more efficient railways, MxV Rail and KRRI have laid the foundation for transformative breakthroughs that will shape the future of rail transport worldwide.
