Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant administrative reshuffle ahead of the anticipated opening of Namma Metro’s Yellow Line, the Karnataka government has appointed Dr. Ravishankar J., a 2001-batch IAS officer, as the new Managing Director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). He succeeds M. Maheshwar Rao, who has been relieved of the additional responsibility.
Prior to this appointment, Ravishankar served as the Secretary in the Agriculture Department. A dental surgery graduate by training, he brings a wealth of administrative experience, having previously held key positions such as Secretary of the Housing Department, Special Commissioner at BBMP, and various leadership roles in the Urban Development, Municipal Administration, Kannada and Culture, and Urban Housing departments. He has also served as Deputy Commissioner in multiple districts, adding district-level governance experience to his urban infrastructure credentials.
His appointment comes at a critical juncture for BMRCL, which is under increasing public pressure to operationalize the much-delayed Yellow Line. Although the line is physically complete, the corporation has missed several deadlines, and public patience is wearing thin. BMRCL now aims to open the line by August 2025, and facilitating this rollout will be among Ravishankar’s first major challenges as MD.
Beyond the Yellow Line, he will also oversee the timely execution of the under-construction Pink and Blue Lines, which are vital components of Bengaluru’s expanding metro network. His leadership will be crucial in steering the BMRCL through this phase of high expectations and growing demand for reliable urban mobility solutions in the city.
As Bengaluru's traffic woes continue and urbanization accelerates, the effective management and timely delivery of metro infrastructure under Ravishankar’s leadership will be closely watched by both the government and citizens.
