Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Metro Rail Today): Hitachi, Ltd. has successfully delivered a comprehensive electrical and mechanical system for the newly opened Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Line 1, which officially began operations on December 22, 2024.
Line 1 is the city’s first urban railway project, spanning 19.7 kilometers with a combination of underground and elevated sections. The underground portion includes three stations, while the elevated section has 11 stations. This new line connects Ben Thanh Station, located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, to Suoi Tien Terminal Station in the northeast. The terminal station is strategically positioned near a major bus hub connecting to the northern provinces.
The construction of Line 1 was funded by a yen loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), underscoring the collaborative efforts between Japan and Vietnam in enhancing urban infrastructure.
As part of its contribution, Hitachi supplied a full suite of advanced systems for the railway line. This includes 17 train sets, consisting of 51 cars, equipped with state-of-the-art Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling technology. Hitachi also provided essential infrastructure, including a telecommunication system with wireless train radio, power supply systems, platform screen doors, automatic fare collection systems, overhead wire and track construction, and rail yard facilities.
The opening of Line 1 is a significant step toward addressing the rapidly growing traffic congestion in Ho Chi Minh City, which has been exacerbated by the city’s economic growth. By supporting the development of sustainable urban transportation, Hitachi aims to contribute to the long-term improvement of the city's public transport system and reduce the reliance on road traffic.
