Indian Railways commences production of High Speed Bullet Train on Vande Bharat platform

Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today):  India is set to revolutionize its railway network with the development of an indigenous bullet train capable of speeds surpassing 250 kilometers per hour (km/h), as revealed by a senior government official. This ambitious project aims to outstrip all existing trains operating within the Indian Railways system. The train, constructed on the Vande Bharat platform renowned for its maximum speed of 220 km/h, marks a significant leap in India's high-speed rail capabilities. Design and development are currently underway at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, showcasing India's growing prowess in rail technology.

In the global arena, high-speed trains are characterized by speeds exceeding 250 km/h, exemplified by renowned models like the French TGV and the Japanese Shinkansen.

India's partnership with Japan in high-speed rail technology is evident in the upcoming bullet trains designated for the Ahmedabad to Mumbai route, currently under construction. Leveraging the advanced Shinkansen E5 series, capable of speeds up to 320 km/h, India aims to revolutionize its rail connectivity on this critical corridor. The emphasis on speed enhancement is evident in the proposed variant of Vande Bharat trains, boasting an accelerated zero to 100 km/h time of just 52 seconds, compared to the existing bullet trains' 54 seconds. These Vande Bharat trains, a product of indigenous development and manufactured by ICF, represent a significant milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in high-speed rail technology. Furthermore, the forthcoming bullet trains will serve the recently announced north, south, and east corridors, showcasing a greater reliance on Indian technology and domestic manufacturing.

These new corridors are poised to complement the existing western corridor, a result of collaboration with Japan and utilizing Japanese technology. The financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), amounting to approximately Rs 40,000 crore for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, underscores the importance of international partnerships in India's ambitious rail modernization endeavors. With the total project cost exceeding Rs 1.08 lakh crore, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) spearheads the implementation of India's first bullet train project. Recent milestones include the completion of 300 km of pier work, signaling significant progress in the project's execution. The finalization of land acquisition for the entire 508 km stretch in January further paves the way for the realization of this transformative infrastructure initiative.

These homegrown bullet trains will ply the recently announced north, south, and east corridors, relying more on indigenous technology and manufacturing processes. These efforts will complement the Western Corridor project developed in collaboration with Japan. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is financially supported by JICA, with the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) overseeing its implementation. NHSRCL has reported the completion of 300 km of pier work and the finalization of land acquisition for the entire 508 km stretch in January.
