Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Kolkata's metro system, the Metro Railway authorities conducted trial runs on the newly extended stretch of the Orange Line, spanning from Ruby Crossing to Beleghata station along the EM Bypass. The trial runs, supervised by senior officials, took place on April 28 between 11:22 am and 12:35 pm, according to a spokesperson from Metro Railway Kolkata.
The extended section of the Orange Line adds approximately 4.39 kilometers to Kolkata's metro network, connecting Hemanta Mukhopadhyay station in the south to Beleghata in the north. This expansion is poised to enhance connectivity and ease commuter congestion in key areas along the EM Bypass corridor.
During the trial runs, two trips were conducted along both up and down lines, meticulously scrutinizing various parameters critical to safe and efficient metro operations. These included track fitness, emergency brake functionality, power supply reliability, proper rake docking procedures, and station staff responsiveness.
Currently, commercial services operate between New Garia and Ruby Crossing, serving commuters across five stations. With the extension reaching Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, passengers will now have the added convenience of interchanging between the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-New Garia) and the Orange Line at Kavi Subhash station. This interchange facility is expected to streamline travel for thousands of commuters navigating Kolkata's bustling metro network.
The recent inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety provided valuable insights and suggestions for infrastructure enhancements along this extended stretch. These recommendations are instrumental in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of metro services for passengers.
The successful trial runs on the extended Orange Line mark a significant milestone in Kolkata's metro journey, signaling progress towards enhanced connectivity and improved commuter experience. With diligent efforts from metro authorities and ongoing infrastructure enhancements, Kolkata's metro system continues to evolve as a vital lifeline for the city's residents and commuters.
