Indore, India (Metro Rail Today): Indore, India’s cleanest city, has achieved yet another significant milestone by becoming the first city in Madhya Pradesh and the 16th in India to commence operations of its metro rail service.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off the inaugural commercial run of the Indore Metro on Saturday, ahead of his address at the Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Mahila Sashaktikaran Maha Sammelan in Bhopal. The launch marks a major advancement in the state’s urban transportation infrastructure.
“Today Madhya Pradesh has got its first metro rail service. Indore has already established a distinct identity in the world for cleanliness. Now Indore’s identity will be redefined by its metro rail service,” said PM Modi during the inauguration. He also confirmed that metro rail work in Bhopal is progressing rapidly.
The Indore Metro is planned to span over 31 km with 28 stations across multiple phases, with a total investment of ₹7,500 crore. The commercial operations began on a 6-km stretch—termed the "super priority corridor"—with five stations, developed at a cost of ₹1,520 crore.
In a tribute to India’s rich legacy of women warriors, the five operational stations have been named after legendary female figures: Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, Rani Durgavati, Maharani Laxmi Bai, Rani Avantibai Lodhi, and Veerangana Jhalkaribai.
Highlighting women empowerment, the inaugural metro journey was reserved exclusively for women passengers, including Swachhata Didis (female sanitation workers) and women employed in the Super Corridor tech zone. Many participants donned sindoori sarees in solidarity with the armed forces’ recent Operation Sindoor.
The Indore Metro will offer free rides to all passengers for the first week, followed by heavily discounted fares in the subsequent two weeks—75% off in week two and 50% in week three.
Commenting on the new development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said:
“The launch of Indore Metro marks a transformative moment for urban transportation in Madhya Pradesh. It reflects our commitment to smart, inclusive, and sustainable mobility solutions. As a proud partner in India's urban evolution, we believe this metro rail will not only ease commuting but also set a new benchmark for integrated public transport across the nation.”
Meanwhile, political commentary accompanied the launch, with former CM Kamal Nath stating that the metro rail project had its roots in the earlier Congress-led administration. He claimed that he had sanctioned the Detailed Project Report (DPR) during his tenure, laying the foundation for both Indore and Bhopal metro systems.
The Indore Metro represents a dynamic leap forward in India's mission to build cleaner, more connected urban centres.
